Meanwhile, Nintendo getting hammered for a mere 1080P even after Reggie claimed so at the last E3.

What's going on?

"Nobody disputes that Sony can't possibly do 4K resolution for PS4".... for movies, NOT games. Frankly, PS3 can already do this upscaling and if Nintendo or MS care, they should have no problem doing it on WiiU and neXtBox repsectively either.

PS2 supported 1080p. Only 1 game used it but supported it and wasn't launched at 599.
PS3 supports 1080p. It's used for movies via bluray and 1080p video content from the store or placed on a storage device or even the systems HDD as well. It's used mostly in PSN games and games that aren't too hard to render. Most notable exceptions would be WipEout and Gran Turismo 5. The bulk of PS3 games simply run 720p native.

PS4 with 4K will likely be the same as 1080p on PS3. Used FOR MOVIES and for games with simpler art-styles like Disgaea and SoundShapes.

LOL. By the time I came back to this thread. There's no need for me to join in. I do sleep sometimes. Maybe i'll add the the main post what 4K is for clarification.

Who fucking cares. As consumers this is a good option. As gamers, noone here gives a damn.

@zarx. Why do they do that, set the TV standard to some proto-form. Since they're so close, why not just go all the way, what do they save by removing a few lines in the verticals?

The tv standard is fine, 3840x2160 is exactly 4x 1920x1080, 16:9 aspect ratio that has been used for tv for a long time.
4096x2160 is a weird ratio 256:135 or 1.896:1
Movies are shot at all kinds of different aspect ratios. They used to be shot at constant image height on 35mm and stretched horizontally with an anamorphic lens to get the wider aspect ratios.
With digital cinema they are captured constrained by constant image width with black borders. The picture gets stretched both horizontally and vertically for a 2.39:1 (4096x1714) movie as apposed to a 1.85:1 (3996x2160) movie.
So 3840x2160, 9 x 1280x720 and 4 x 1920x1080 is as good a compromise as any.

I know(I hope) 4k res for games is a joke, but I am sure ps4/720 are not going to be 1080p/60 fps, so I dont expect a huge jump on graphics or resolutions. And that alone is going to create a lot of buzz.

It is interesting how there is such a debate on a rumor while we know simply NOTHING about the next Playstation.

Actually we know just one thing: a Sony's top manager stated that Sony isn't interested on making a new console until the technology will allow a great gap from the current console. And right now, he said, there isn't such technology. If it goes as I think the next PS will be available on holiday 2015. Just see what happened to the Wii U, announced on June 2011 and still we don't know much about its real specifications.
