HP Pavillion DV7  , the best laptop ever made for its price

http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-DV7-7000-Anti-Glare-Midnight/dp/B007YQ52E2

don't go with the Vaios the newer models are smaller and the rest are "Ultrabooks" in other words, thin as hell laptops , but pricey and lame just like Apple laptops

and whatever you do , NEVER buy a toshiba laptop, and also stay away from Razer Blade its shit. and overpriced as fuck, has outdated graphic card and processor.

Of course it goes without saying that you should never buy an Apple Macbook.

I have to chuckle whenever people say this.  I have had nothing but love for my toshiba laptop, which is a couple years old now.  Has it ever overheated on me (which is why I'm assuming you say this)?  Yes, it has.  But it was almost expected in the scenario.  There was literally zero air flow in my dorm room, leading to dust issues.  Simply blowing out my laptop with dust remover every month while living in the dorms fixed any and all issues.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

You can get a decent ultrabook from Sony and Dell for around $700-800. Don't get too big a screen like 15.6 or 17 inches as it will get quite bulky. Asus is quite good too.

Thanks for all the suggestions everybody I'm probably going to go with a Dell i15 it only costs $600 and it has 6 GB RAM 500 HDD and i7 processor. I was amazed at the price considering the specs.

i7 doesn't mean good. 6GB is overkill.

And it still won't play games so specs are irrelevant. Absoluetly every machine you can buy will do the web browsing, music, videos and office programs you will be running on it. If it looks too good to be true, it is.

What I'm saying is, go cheaper.

And ignore all these brand suggestions, they're all anecdotal evidence and you shouldn't pick because this one guy's HP broke once.

True.

Im starting school soon and i need a new laptop. I need some suggestions on what type of laptop i should buy. My price range is $700-$1000 thank you.

I just bought a Macbook Air and it's pretty cool.  Nice and portable.  I PC desktop and home and I don't have an iphone, but I went with the Mac because if something goes wrong I can just take it back to the store.  I feel like I'd have issues if I bought a Dell or HP, no dedicated stores if shit goes wrong.  I only bought it because I'm sick of typing papers at home only.  Would be nice to get some work done at any of the various coffee shops around here.  A nice change of scenery.

i've had two toshiba laptops , TWO, and they all died quickly, they're just not built to last.
