Forums - Nintendo - Most technically advanced game on Wii?

So in technical terms is there any game on Wii that couldn't be done on the original Xbox? It is more powerful than the last gen Xbox, isn't it?

There are a few games that would not be possible exactly as they are on Wii.    But things could be scaled back in such a way or rednered with a different technique that it would be hard to notice the difference.

The Rogue Squadron games on Gamecube couldn't be done on Xbox. Lucasarts was going to port RS2 and RS3 to Xbox but they couldn't get the games running nearly as well as their GC counter parts so they canned the port.

Out of curiosity, what are these games?

Dude, do you have a source that proves that? If you do I'd love to be able to read it.

I don't know why people tell me to get a life. I'm a gamer, I have lots of lives!

Pretty much all those already mentioned.

Darc is actually correct.  I'd have to track down the interview but this was a pretty big notch in the GC belt when that interview came out.

Eh. The most advanced Wii games use the system's power in different ways, especially ways that benefit the game's direction. Xenoblade's draw distance, Super Mario Galaxy's planetoids, Monster Hunter Tri's animation, Darkside Chronicles with its shadow effects... I wouldn't say that any game pushes the Wii to the limit on all fronts. Only the ones that matter to each game.

Then again, there's always Zangeki no Reginleiv. Too bad it suffered from framerate issues!

Just glad to see the much overlooked OverLord getting some much deserved attention in this thread.

Indeed. It was quite and impressive feat graphically. Its too bad games that had leve of graphical fidelity on the Wii were few and far between.

So you couldn't do Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Conduit 2, Red Steel 2, Darkside Chronicles, or Zangeki no ReginLeiv on the original Xbox?

IIRC, it paid a price for it, with framerate issues, a grass and things drawing feet ahead of your character, and some very blocky shadows. Very ambitious though, I'll give it that; bloom, detailed environments, 360-style shadowmaps, lots of characters running round at once, etc. Overall though I think it bit off more than it could chew.

The majority of the time, framerate issues are the results of faulty programming and/or lack of optimization especially when it occurs sporadically like that.

You could tell by the looseness of some of the gameplay mechanics that they didn't go all in on Overlord. It was a nice effort though.
