Forums - PC - Gabe Newell brands Windows 8 a 'catastrophe'

Ouch.

Whilst I haven't had a hands-on with Microsoft's upcoming OS, Gabe Newell was brutally honest when asked about his feelings on Windows 8 at an annual videogame conference in Seattle.

Making a rare public appearance at Casual Connect in Seattle, the Valve head honcho (and noted knife enthusiast) told former Microsoft VP of game publishing Ed Fries: "I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space. I think we’ll lose some of the top-tier PC/OEMs, who will exit the market."

As you can imagine, Gabe praised the openness of the PC platform as part of Valve's success, weighed in on touch-screen controls and why Valve wants the 2,500+ games on Steam to be playable on Linux platforms. Gabe also casually mentioned the $70,000 wearable computer that Valve has built ... wait, what?

I read a full article on this on Gamasutra I believe, but I don't understand why Gabe says that.

He literally doesn't give a reason.

I have tremendous respect for Gabe Newell but he often formulates very strong opinions on things with very little actual reasoning. He often changes his mind just as quickly leaving me to believe that this instant dislike of Windows 8 may be both unfounded and fleeting.

There was once a time when he said the PS3 should be discontinued.

We'll see what the future holds for Windows 8, I'm certainly not taking his opinions of this kind very seriously as he has been proven to over-exaggerate in the past.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

I agree with him. I don't want to be forced to use touch screen for my PC desktop.

After XP, Vista was released and it was one step backward.
After 7, 8 is released, and it is a step backward.

i have absolutely no clue about windows 8 but isn't that like windows 7 just with that metro shit? so if i want to see a normal desktop, i only have to push on desktop and i get the desktop like i havbe in windows 7 or like i had in windows 95?

i only saw a few pictures but i have no clue what the problem really is except that metro screen you maybe get when you start the pc or what exactly is the problem?

It's funny because he still has a bunch of MS stock from when he left to start Valve.

the $70.000 wearable computer is only that expensive because they made it in his size!

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

while I'm not a fan of Microsoft at all.. Window's 8 does look good and interesting. not enough for me to buy a PC but good still

He changes his mind every other day.

There are a bunch of people in this industry who just like to talk a lot.

- Peter Molyneux
- David Cage
- Cliffy B
- Gabe Newell
- Hideo Kojima
- David Jaffe
- Michael Pachter

You get used to it.
