Every new employee at a library gets shocked by the number of these books checked out and it is hardly men getting them. Fifty Shades of Gray is the rare popular one and I have no inclination to find out how it is different than the others.

Likely similar to Twilight's appeal, if i had to hazard a guess, someone took the cliches and tropes of the genre and packaged them in a unique way.
