It is an odd phenomenon, like all those harlequin books you'll find at the literature section of any store, dozens and dozens of them, made almost as profusely as porno movies, while men don't tend to go in for erotic fiction that much

Every new employee at a library gets shocked by the number of these books checked out and it is hardly men getting them. Fifty Shades of Gray is the rare popular one and I have no inclination to find out how it is different than the others.  

Likely similar to Twilight's appeal, if i had to hazard a guess, someone took the cliches and tropes of the genre and packaged them in a unique way.
