I hope so.. my ps3 is shutting itself down from time to time so i think it's on it's last legs...

If it is right then this new model seems to actually be a little bit bigger than the slim. Maybe it is thinner or something? Personally I had been assuming that the inner rectangle was the console but then someone pointed out that the outer rectangle has a little mark that looks like the place for a button or something. 

Maybe its going to be a simple redesign and a packed in Vita to compete vs WiiU.

I think it's possible they went with a design similar to a slim DVD player for this model.

That's strange, why would a slim version be actually bigger? Even if its hight is lower and it's lighter I'd like the PS3 redesign to be smaller in lenghth and width, otherwise I'll be disappointed. Perhaps the pictures are out of scale? They seem to take the little 'legs' (I don't know how you call those) as a reference, but perhaps they are smaller in the new design.

Well a real slim PS3 like the PSOne or PSTwo isn't possible because of the HDD. But they can probably slim the currentPS3 down quite a bit.

Certainly possible the little rubber legs have changed. However it seems unlikely. They are apparently the same on the PS3 and Slim. I don't see what the point in redoing and using a different element that doesn't need change would be. Would be creating cost for no reason. I mean they already have that component for the normal slim and they are simply functional not a design element. So makes perfect sense to use the same pieces you already have for the redesign. 

Technically it's narrower but longer. However I think it still turns out a little bigger overall. Of course it could be half the height since we can't see that. 

Does seem a little odd if true though. However I wouldn't be too surprised if it was the case. 

Well, the term slim does not means smaller, it just means "thin".  So maybe if we see the new version on a different perspective we can actually see the "thinness" XD

I would say the comparison is a bad one, because if you superpose the slim over the fat you see that the slim is not as "wide" as it is in reallity.   The slim has a dimension that is actually bigger than the one in the fat.

Phat PS3 Dimensions: 12.81" wide, 10.79" deep, 3.86" tall

Slim PS3 Dimensions: 11.42" wide, 11.42" deep, and 2.56" tall

And yet they have almost the exact wide:

The Slim on the picture should exceed the wide of the phat in the pic by a lot more if it was  a true comparison.

It's likely. Perfect strategy to combat Wii U
