It will crash n burn. The price will be about the same as the other consoles, but no unique ip(s) to really bring in the casual crowd. A lot of grandparents were picking up the Wii as a gift. What is the real selling point of the Wii U? Most people think it's an add on. Every major 3rd party game is available on xbox 360 or ps3 that everyone already has now. What is the incentive?
I'll admit; I was excited for the WII. The Wii U? They mind as well call it the Nintendo 360. Their presentation metioned the 360 over and over again when it came to ports. They built the controller to the same design as the 360 with a minor twist and they will mimic the 360 in disc space issues. They will make their own tiny disc format ala the gamecube and the Wii.
So the Nintendo hard core will pick one up and a few on the fence. All the stock holders will see is a major drop off. Everyone else will wait on every other companies launches to see the line ups and ironing out console bugs. Wii U? Doomed to 3rd place when third party companies can no longer port games due to it already being antiquated.
Get ready for a flood of Games that will still use dialoge boxes rather than voice overs and all your favorite Wii games in "HD"!!! Cool, you stick with that. I'll play the next Zelda and Mario at an early adoptor's house and I'll keep up with my PS360 until a game comes out that I have to have. Sony And MS still has a '13 game show to wow me. Nintendo had thiers and it honestly has nothing for me to want to part with 300+ to play. Sorry....
