Forums - Sales - For Sony to make their PS3 fiscal forecast...

Most likely they will try to beat the street for the quarter. They can do it 2 ways. They can meet and exceed their shipment forecast (doubtful) or they can make a profit in the PS3 division early by holding strong onto the current price point (most likely to happen of the 2). They will blame the missed shipment's on the fact that they decided profitability was more important then dropping the price and selling at a loss again.

The PS3 still means a big loss for Sony. Even if you believe (and I don't) that they can sell them at cost price, they still have to earn a lot of money for the R&D of it, not to mention the other staff at SCE. Furthermore the 1st and 2nd party studio's probably haven't made a lot of profit.

As for the missing of the shipping target: Shareholders are not going to be happy about it, especially if Sony has to present another year of big losses in the CE department. Shareholders will probably demand a profit of it, which can prevent Sony from cutting the price of the PS3.

Sony is really going to need their cameras too sell like crazy. That's the only reason investors overlooked the gaming division in the last report. The camera divsion, which has the least to do with the gaming, bailed out Sony big time last quarter with unanticipated growth.

I believe Blu-Ray's apparent victory has made the chance of another PS3 price reduction less likely.

Sony shareholders and executives dont need the PS3 to take off in sales now to insure Blu-Ray victory. They can enjoy the Blu-Ray victory with profits rather than fight the good fight.

Never. Openly, but it's what you secretly wish. You hate so much, it's not even funny anymore. You make it sound like Sony is an evil conglomerate who only wishes to destroy life, and that everyone who buys a Wii has faced some inevitable universal truth and sense of being and that Nintendo will transcend the mortal plain and leave no less of a track than the last ice age... I'm sorry, but that's almost what it sounds like, even though the pun's and potshots are a little cloaked...

It's good to see you've finally moved past your infatuation with stalking Avinash_Tyagi and selectively quote sniping him, to just doing what you've always really wanted to do -- just making stuff up completely and attributing it to other people.

Holy crap this site needs an ignore feature.

Thanks for the support... Why do you even respond if all you wish is to ignore? Massive fail.

How many millions can they get retailers to buy. I was in Best Buy yesterday and there was a stack of 60 40gb PS3s on the floor.

Come on, we all know that Sony only sells one third of it's shipments! A_T said so, so it has to be true!!

Where did I say that PS3 sells only 1/3 of its shipments?

That's not at all my intention, i don't like Sony because I feel they engage in bad buisness practices and harm the industry.

But I do point out that Sony will have a hard time reaching even 10 million sold by the end of march at its current sales rate so there will be a lot of shipments forced into the supply chain

If those are you preriquisites for hating, then Microsoft should be taking the blow, so I don't buy that.

Oh i'm not a fan of microsoft eithe, but as we've seen they are less of a factor in the WW market, almost a nonfactor in japan.

Regardless I believe you exagerrate my stance on the issue, while I am not a fan of Sony I  have tried to keep my arguments on the facts, and I never try and make stements that I know are false, like the 1/3 shipment thing

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

@Renar,

Question, Crazzy.

What causes PS3 to sell in March 133% more than it did 2 months prior in January? Are you predicting a large price cut as well? That might do it.
First of all new BUNDLES.
I think a clearer chart of the PS2 during that time period is:

You se.. we comapre 2nd year PS2 and PS3 sales for the begining of the year. THEY are practically SAME. Then what is a problem? I don`t see the problem.
2nd year. January.

So strangely enough, if they can get a 50% increase in the next 3 months they will hit your 2.5M revised. A good size jump, but perhaps doable. And then like you say, stuff those retail supply lines with another 2.5M. Ouch!!
My predictions are usually OPTIMISTIC. =) As you can see, for the end of 2007 it WORKEDF for EUROPE. In worst case, predictions will be realistic. Then it`s only 2 mln., but making 3 mln. for retailer is still possible for such BIG company as Sony. =)

@CrazzyMan: The point is that stores *already* have PS3s that have been shipped - but not yet sold.

So of the 3m you have counted as sales, 1m (maybe more) has already been shipped.
It`s a possibility
BUT, i do know, that in december + week of November sonu shipped 1.2 mln. And sold around 1 mln.

The ONLY time you get the benefit of channel stuffing is at/after launch (assuming demand < supply). Stores sell 'x' units, and also order 'y' extra units to remain on the shelves. After that, they order approximately (on average) the same number of units they sell. Otherwise piles of PS3s in stores would just keep growing indefinitely.
Time will show, they still have atleast 10 weeks, and IT`S A SONY. =)

Okay. Truce. And as you may know, I'm actually a huge Ninty fan, I just felt let down by the Wii! Many can't understand that. I was very excited when I frist saw the Wii in action, they showed bits of SMG, MP3 and some fishing game or other (reminded me of the fishing in OoT!!), but when it came there was nothing for me there. I gave it a chance, but it just died down very quickly for me.

I might still get one though, if only for Mario, Zelda and Sonic games! It all rides on MarioKart, if that's as good as I think it is, a Wii will be in my house the day after launch.

Crazzyman,

Why are you comparing PS3 2nd January to PS2 1st January. Mentioned in another thread how in January 2001 the PS2 was very supply constrained. Sorry but in January 2008 the PS3 is not supply constrained at all.

@thx1138,

PS2 sold 16 mln. in 2001, if PS3 will do 16 mln. in 2008. i don`t think, that 16 mln. is a BAD number. =)
Time will SHOW. ;)
