Innovation is NOT R&D. It doesn't consist of having the largest research budget and betting on everything. It isn't either that you do what is out there currently, "bigger, badder, and better". What it consists of is beating others to the market with new changes and features that others aren't coming up with that others, and masses on forums will end up mocking and saying is stupid. You then win by this.
The room I speak of is this website, and videogame industry, consisting of console makers. Of the tree, Nintendo is the only one displaying leadership and innovation. One can argue Apple has been up there, but this is not the room I am referring to.
You may doubt me, but answer me this: Exactly WHAT are Microsoft and Sony bringing to the table now that is new, and different that changes the game the way Nintendo has been doing since the Wii? Microsoft brought Achievements. Sony brought what, Home? Fact is Nintendo is actually not caring what rabble on forums think, nor the media coverage of things. They are doing stuff new. It is not the same old.
And this goes as far as how they talk about things. You actually see thought going into what they are doing that is NEW, to address problems seen that aren't currently addressed. In this, people will then talk about, "But, but... Microsoft's talk about Natal show intellectual understanding of things, that counts, right?" Does it? What I heard from Microsoft regarding Natal was what Nintendo said years earlier. They just do it bigger and more extreme. And Sony? Take motion control and say "We do it better". It isn't innovation, it is refinement.
It is all red ocean thinking here, outside of Nintendo. It is not innovation or leadership, it is bullying for a set market currently. Disagree with me, show where exactly Microsoft and Sony are bringing out anything new here, that changes the game, and causes much debate. All I can see is, "Wow, X won E3 because Y game title". Game titles are not innovation, they are content. They don't change how people play. They can lead to an evolving of the art of entertainment, but they don't fundamentally change how people play.
Ok, I will let others jump in here and show otherwise. I would be interested in hearing how Sony and Microsoft are doing anything to advance the art. Only thing you can really knock here is that Microsoft and Sony have not leaked info regarding their next generation systems. Anyone here care to guess what they will offer different than what is out now, the way Nintendo did with the WiiU, which lead to first to people thinking it was pointless, to now saying SmartGlass does it better?
