Forums - Sony - Putting an old HD in a new PS3 without formatting

I have a PS3 with a 120GB HDD and Im running out of space. What should I do? I wish I could have around 250-500GB of HDD space. I want a cheap ($50) and easy option (I have no wireless internet).

you need a 2,5 inch SATA HDD. 50$ should be enough for 500gb, I don't know the prices in your country though.
then, you need to back up your data onto an external HDD from your PS3. After that you put in the new HDD and format it. When it's done you only need to copy from your backup onto your new formatted HDD.

Game of the year 2017 so far:

5. Resident Evil VII
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
1. Super Mario Odyssey

Cant be done, buying another 500gb hard drive is the only option or loose everything

why should I lose everything if I have my backup on an external HDD and then transfer it to new formatted HDD in the new PS3?

Wont work, you can only restore the backup data on the PS3 that you backed up on. Although saved game data can be restored onto another PS3 (or maybe this is what you mean buy "Why should i lose everything") but not the games and DLC ect ect,

OR

Maybe delete stuff from your old PS3 (game data files from games that you dont play anymore) so you have around 140gig of data then transfer (using ethernet cable option) to new PS3 with the 160gigHDD?

Keep in mind that you need to have registered your old PS3 on PSN, and then confirm it on your new PS3. I never connected my old PS3 to PSN, and when I backed up all my data and transferred it over, I basically lost all my saves as my pre-existing profile thought these saves were from another owner.

So all the trophies I had and all the progress I made were undone. Don't make the same mistake as me.

Really? WTF?? This shit is ridiculous...I can re-download my games so I won't lose stuff anyway but...It's going to be tedious...

Anyway, I'll see what happens in a few hours.

You mean connected to the PSN for the trophies. Yes it logs in to PSN when it starts, my trophies are on PSN (look at my sig). But why is it important to register my PS3 on PSN? Haven't done it yet.

I think so it verifies your old profiles as being authentic.

Buy the cheapest PS+ subscription and upload all your Important save files to the cloud, then format your HDD in the new PS3, set up your PSN account again and re-download all your games and save files.

..and enjoy some great free games for the time of your subscription.

i think that should work just fine, or am i missing something?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
