About a year ago, I bought a 1TB external HDD for about 78 dollars, and some odd cents... Personally, I'd never get anything less than 1TB, and I'd not spend too much on a 500GB HDD... Don't get ripped off.
ok, I've just started backing up the data onto the external HDD...15h 45min left it says...lol I'll be lucky if I can play on Saturday...

You need to backup it in an External HD, format and restore it in a new one (or the same HD).
Sorry... impossible.
You can backup your save data in PenDrive (or Plus Cloud Saving service) and restore in the new HD.
i don't think you can use your backup data on another PS3

...and another 15 hours to install it all again on the same HDD, since you couldn't use it on the new PS3

how much is the size of the data you have on the 500gb drive? if its less than 160gb you dont need to loose anything... just a few hours of your life!

It was actually 296gb. People, if I'd transfer all my data to the standard 160gb HDD, I would have to use the smaller HDD instead of the 500gb one. This doesn't make more sense than re-downloading stuff, isn't it?
