Forums - General - Test your Ears! Can you "still" hear it?

Hey Guys,

i stumbled upon something that is actually quite interresting, since it actually may be able of showing sign's of us guys slowly aging!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrewnzQYrPI

this Video was once a Ringtone (Or, lets say, the last "beep" in there was a very famous, though annoying Ringtone for Cellphones back in the day), of which people said that you may not be capable of hearing it anymore once youve reached a certain age, due to the fact that aging will dump down your ability to hear higher sounds.

i thought of it as trolling since i never heard of this, but when i tried to hear it with only one ear at a time, i noticed that my left ear is actually not capable of hearing that sound anymore. (For some reason my left Ear's hearing is faaar below average, while the right one's is far above.)

So yeah, how's it for you fellas? (A word of warning though! It may be very uncomfortable to listen to these sounds, and it may happen that you feel a little dizzy if you repeat the process too often... which is why - this is only a rumor though - a certain Song in the original Pokemon Games was later altered. due to the fact of giving little kids a headache.)

I'm proud to say I can. Even after that Helloween concert back in '03 that left me deaf for a few days.

You're up against the limits of speakers, earphones, MP3 compression and Youtube compression. There's no way to verify those frequencies are actually what is being outputted.

there's actually something to it, but people could try different kinds of Sound Outputs. For me, Headphones, Speakers, aswell as the built in speakers from my Notebook give me the exact same results, with the only difference of hearing the sound a little less clearly/more clearly, but in the end i can hear 17,4 with my right ear with any of those outputs, while i  cannot with any method on my left ear.

I heard them all! Does this mean i'm special?

If you're like 40 Years old, it means you're special. If youre aged above 24, you're above average. If you're under 24 Years old, you're average, meaning that your System works fine.

@Spurge: as long as you can hear the last beep, youre totally fine. And given the fact that you seem to be more than 24 Years old, youre definetly above average.

Edit: It really bugs me right now that i KNOW that there is a sound only one of my ears can hear, no matter how much i turn up the volume lol. ^^

Oh right, scare people because they can't hear it due to their speakers in cheap notebooks, smartphones, whatever.
If you want a real test, go see a doc. If you need to pay for it, consider moving to another country lol
17kHz is not very high, do some research. If you are not able to hear it (through reasonable speakers/headphones, obviously), it is most likely your fault because you didn't guard your ears; can be earphones (even "low" volume is bad for your ears), being cool in public loud places not guarding your ears with your hands or protectors, etc.
It's not just based on age. Sure, your range shrinks some (also in the low frequencies) but it's not a terrible thing unless you crucified your ears.
You can't undo it because the small hair things in your ears are gone/broken; better start guarding your ears, it's worth it.

btw lol @quoting the text in the video as if it was scientific facts and the 100% ultimate real test haha

Youre right about guarding the ears, but its our genetics that'll eventually lead to a loss of hearing, obviously. Just as you'll eventually lose the ability to walk, see and so on. be it before or after you die. (my former postings could be misread though, the downgrade in hearing is almost always limited to frequencies you simply dont hear by nature, and dont need to. And the loss is actually abysmally small, and not worth pointing out. It CAN be pointed out though by forcing those unnecessary Sounds)

Edit @ your Edit:

Well as i said before, i know little about this whole thing, all i know is that there are people (tried it with people in real life already) that may not be able to here the last sounds anymore, and all of those who cannot are mostly above 40. But if youre better informed than me, feel free to correct whatever wrongs i may have thrown out.

I could hear all of them!
LIKE A BOSS

I could hear all of them until 17.4 kHz, which apparently you can only hear if you're under 24. I turn 25 in 2 days, so I'm not too upset about that one.

*However* I was sceptical, so I generated some sounds using my computer to see at what frequency I couldn't hear it any more. 18.5 kHz is the point that I can no longer hear it, not 17.4 kHz. So I doubt the video is outputting the frequency it claims.
