NSMB on the whole has been a disappointment for me, because instead of being a true successor to the originals, it's just a lazy mishmash of elements from Mario 1-World and relies mainly on nostalgia to keep gamers interested.

How about introducing some completely new gameplay elements, and not just a couple of new suits that suck hard (penguin especially).

How about you use this thread to tell us what those new gameplay elements should be

For starters, how about a new way of finishing off each level instead of the tired "flagpole", and some nice bonus levels too.

Second, introduce a new suit/powerup that plays an integral part in level design and gameplay, the same way the leaf / raccoon suit in Mario 3 was a game-changer, and the introduction of Yoshi in Mario World plus the cape and spin jump opened up even more gameplay elements.

Third, give us a unique over world on the scale of Mario World that allows for all kinds of secrets, branching paths and exploration, rather than the incredibly linear overworlds currently featured in NSMB that basically just serve as a placeholder between stages.

I hear that, I'm actually in 100% agreeance with you, and every one else that's posted thus far.

But I will say that the person who posted about SMB not pushing boundaries, graphically, and having simple art simply isn't true. It may not look like it now, but 2D Mario was always a graphical powerhouse before the 3D Mario's started being made, which have also alsways been given high pv's. World had excellent graphics for its time as did Mario Bros 2 and 3.

Only recently has the 2D games been met with low production values, which begs the question why?

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

I don't really care about the production values, but what is more important to me is the lack of new worlds. Besides that jungle one with the acidic lakes, the game just recycles the usual suspects we've played for years - desert land, water land, etc..

How can it be relying mainly on nostalgia to keep people interested, when somewhere around half the players are unlikely to have played 2D Mario games back in the day? There are 16 freaking years between Super Mario World and New Super Mario Land, they're not all the same buyers. Add to that the fact that NSMB is looking to sell around 50% more than SMW did, which is the best selling of the old Marios, and it gets even odder. (I'm excluding the original SMB here, for obvious reasons)

If it attempted to just rely on nostalgia, I don't see how it could avoid being a huge miss sales-wise.

I'd like to see a reworking of the graphics. It doesn't have to go full polygonal 3D, but I just think the graphical style of the world is a little too "Photoshopy". What I mean is everything looks like it was designed in Photoshop. Can you imagine how crazy awesome it would look if it was hand drawn like Rayman Legends? That's what I'd like to see.

1) New world themes. Throw in factory, arabian nights, far Eastern Asian culture (i.e. Chinese or Japanese stuff).
2) A continuous world map instead of small separate ones.
3) More levels. We have been stuck with around 80 since SMB3. Make that 120.
4) Cool new power-ups. NSMB failed with Mega-/Mini-Mushrooms and the awful Blue Shell, but NSMB Wii was good enough. The Propeller Hat in place of the broken Cape from SMW was welcome, the Ice Flower did its job and the Penguin Suit was an amazing jack of all trades (Ice Flower, no sliding on ice, Frog Suit underwater capabilities). And Yoshi was back, although limited to a handful of levels.
5) No Miis. They simply don't belong in Mario games, because Mario and Luigi already fulfill their purpose.
6) Production values worthy of Nintendo's biggest IP. This obviously includes the music.
7) Fortress boss battles can be kept simple, but Castle boss battles should up the ante.
8) Forbid farming. Completed levels should be grayed out instead of being repeatable. Only when Bowser is defeated shall they become replayable.
9) Add a time trial mode with medals. Similar to DKCR, but without the nasty trolling.
10) Add a mission mode. At least one mission for every level. Missions include collecting a certain number of coins in a given timeframe, defeating a certain number of enemies in a given timeframe, finding five objects in a given timeframe, defeating bosses or completing levels only as regular Mario and possibly other objectives.

Oooh, now this is really good. Like some others in here you mention a continuous map, I'm guessing similar to SMW. And I must agree that that was awesome, it made the whole adventure more seamless and connected. Also there were seperate passageways and you could bring Yoshi to every level with you except the castles. And the different color Yoshi's had different abilities..That was awesome.

You didn't even mention an online mode which I think is an absolute neccesity.

I'd really like a retro throwback, graphics-wise, cut the silly 2.5D stuff and go back to the beautiful sprite stuff from SMW and SMB3, it's a sidescroller, plus, running on Wii U, the artwork could be incredible. The maps from the overworld would be welcome too, SMB3 and SMW's maps were packed with secrets and as already said, often let you choose your difficulty through their secrets if you paid close enough attention. Mega Man did it, why not Mario? It'd be very easy to sell as a whole 'the legend returns to his roots' sort of thing, so it would be good fiscally too! Bring back the retro! :D

^Here here. I approve this message lol

The f*ing possibility for us to kick turtle shells UPWARDS!!!!!! I hate NSMB for not having the upwards kick even 1991 Super Mario World had it and it was awesome!

I was playing NSMB and was totally happy and after almost completing a level I remembered the upwards kick and tried it but instead of kicking the shell upwards i simply kicked it forward it hit a pipe and then killed me............... sad story i know!

P.S. lets make a petition I dunno "operation flying shell"?

Lol! That's funny. And true I tried to do the same thing! That was a great addition.
