Most likely it's the 'Sync' button. Nintendo may have kept the arduous need to sync the controller. Which now begs the question if Nintendo will let us sync the controller with other Wii U's.
The only thing I'm questioning is why the "U" isn't Blue which we all know is consistent in any logos or icons we all have seen. It would be pointless if it only turns blue if the controller is on. It's what differentiates the Wii from the Wii U

The "3" in the 3DS logo is red. Though, it is all grey on the back of the console.

Hahah! I actually had to remove the Nerf case on my 3DS to check it out. Anyway, it's the back, though. I may just be overthinking it.

That would be the reflection of the card sitting underneath it.

I liked the old design which was more influenced by tablets than controllers. It had a simpler look and was thinner making it easier to hold by the edge instead of gripping. And Nintendo, just print the U symbol on the U controller.

Saw that too. There is an actual square button next to power. The one under the Dpad looks like it is painted, could be a sensor?
