Maybe in the case of Oblivion. But if the specs of Xbox 720 and PS4 are conservative it will restrict multiplatform games in general, even their PC versions.

I believe we need a strong lowest common denominator hardwarewise.

As long as there are mod tools that doesn't really matter, just look at Skyrim the game is designed arround the limitations of 7 year old consoles, and that shows. But there are mods that push it beyond most other games. With super high res textures, improved lighting etc. And by teaking ini files it is possible to push draw distance beyond the built in limits.

The lowest common denominator will soon be Tablets, Laptops and what devs can do in a web browser not consoles.

Devs will always make their games on the platform with the most active buyers. Right now it's consoles.

What makes you think lalptops will now become the lead platform? lmfao. They've been out for more than a decade, and in the end they are still just PCs.

Tablets are just like PCs as well. Devs need a fixed platform that doesn't change each year. That's why consoles will always be the lead platform.

I didn't say lead I said lowest common denominator, learn to read.

Calm down.

What do you  mean by lowest common denominator?

And regarding the Wii U... would anyone really be disappointed if the majority of games for it looked "ONLY" as good as the latest current gen titles like Uncharted 3 or Battlefield 3?

The problem is devs will figure that if people are gaming on a Wii U then they do not care about graphics much, same way they did with the Wii.  So the Wii U will end up with games that do not match up to games like Uncharted 3, BF3, GoD3 etc, much like the majority of Wii games do not match up to top GC titles, despite being able.  Only a few games made that effort on Wii.

Doubt that, because if you're going to make games that underpowered, why make them for consoles at all? The other point possibly being that rising dev costs will mean that developers are forced to incorporate Wii U into their plans at least until PS4/720 have a healthy userbase between them (which could take at least until late 2014), by which point the Wii U would be so entrenched in the system that it would be harder to ignore completely.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

The baseline from which games will be built on, the weakest hardware that developers will be designing their games for. Tablets will be as powerful as the 360 by 2014.

So you're saying that tablets will become the lead platform for games. I was right.

You're wrong though. Tablets are just like PCs. Tech Specs are too varied or devs to design games for tablets then port to other platforms.

There's no way PS4/720 games will ever be on tablets dude. Not if Epic has their way.

The problem with pie in the sky wishes like this is that console gamers don't want to pay for it, even if they insist that they do (most won't when they see the price tag) and neither MS nor Sony want to subsidize another hardware platform for consumers by discounting retail units hundreds off the production cost per unit.

If Epic really wants to design a game engine that requires hundreds of dollars worth of GPU, then they should just stick to developing games for PCs with bleeding edge, top of the line VGA cards. But naturally, they don't want to try and develop, much less sell a game engine that runs on less than 1% of all PCs in circulation.

They really can't expect MS or Sony to effectively pay for those high end GPUs if they are to sell the next gen of consoles at prices consumers are realistically willing to pay.

Well, if people are really willing to spend £500 or whatever it will cost for this new console, then so be it, especially when most of the games will only be minor improvements over what we see now.

I'm fine with the current level of graphical fidelity. We need new ways to play and more engrossing games, rather than pushing the pixel count.

At first, yes. Games will basically just be touched-up PS3/360 versions of games. It will take about 2 years until Ps4 and 720 become lead platforms for games.

Just look an Xbox 360 launch title like Call of Duty 2, and compare it to the newest one, Modern Warfare 3.

Yes, but overall the graphical gap will be much smaller than this current gen over last. As such, they'll be minor improvements, and certainly not PC levels.

I'm not sure I like it if this is the way gaming will end up. We need more games which look like this:

Meaning that all three are not the super-gigantic leap some of you think they will be and are more inline with my comparison thread based off of the latest rumors.

the OP our right says Epic Games going on record saying “the platforms we designed ‘Unreal Engine 4’ for have not been announced yet”

aka not wii U

aka MSony's consoles

aka MSony's consoles are significantly more powerful than the wii U which is exactly what you've been arguing against for a year now

aka your wrong

can't wait for your apology thread.

He's saying he wants those consoles to be more powerfull than they currently are... because you know he's actually seen them being a top dev and creator of one of the most utilized engines. So, in his opinion they are not powerful enough... meaning they are not cutting edge of PC technology. All you have to do is look at my comparison thread to see that this is true.

Wii U will be able to run UE4... as will the others.
All three will be within a reasonable power level of each other.
All three will be less powerful than a custom built $1000 PC when they launch.
All three will be a smaller jump over the most powerful console this gen than what they were over the Xbox last gen.

I am right and I will be making a "I was right all along" thread where you can kiss my ass as I've been saying this would be true for years now.

I agree the graphical leap won't be as big as from SD to HD but it will still be substantial. It won't be minor like you keep saying.

Unreal Engine 4 needs about 10x current gen power to run. We know next-gen consoles will run that. I'm assuming the 10x is for 1080p UE4 support so we can see 6-8x powerful consoles running UE4 games at 720p. My guess is that the Wii U will take this route.

@ Bolded - Because people still buy them and even defend the practice, look at the Wii.
@ The rest - People said same thing about Wii and PS3/360, Wii even had a great userbase.  We all saw how third party devs moved their AAA games to Wii right?

Really not the same thing since Wii had an archaic, late 1990s architecture that made porting extremely difficult or impossible.

Wii U will be using a modern architecture.
