Forums - Gaming - Epic Games 'actively lobbying' for more power in next gen consoles

What will be interesting is if only one of either Sony or MS appease Epic. Would Epic only support that platform (along with PC obviously), or primarily, or would it have little effect at all?

Maybe in the case of Oblivion. But if the specs of Xbox 720 and PS4 are conservative it will restrict multiplatform games in general, even their PC versions.

I believe we need a strong lowest common denominator hardwarewise.

As long as there are mod tools that doesn't really matter, just look at Skyrim the game is designed arround the limitations of 7 year old consoles, and that shows. But there are mods that push it beyond most other games. With super high res textures, improved lighting etc. And by teaking ini files it is possible to push draw distance beyond the built in limits.

The lowest common denominator will soon be Tablets, Laptops and what devs can do in a web browser not consoles.

Some games are mod friendly but most multiplats aren't much improved on PC.

And there are stuff to graphics that are fixed to the lowest common denominator version of a game, such as geometry, polygons, bumpmaps and other stuff.

not fixed, just some devs don't bother making better versions, with next gen consoles I doubt that will be a major problem. Games look great anyway and they will look even better in the years to come. Not to mention with fully dynamic lighting and tesselation making games look better on stronger hardware will be easier as improving it will just be pushing up a slider in the engine.

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

Seriously, its been 8 years since this gen started, I definitely want a future-proof console that will last another 8 years, not one that will be underpowered and left in the dust 2 years from now.

I already have a custom built gaming PC. But I like consoles as there are many games that are on consoles which are not on PC. Plus updating the pc every 2-3 years is not something I enjoy doing, which you don't have to bother with on consoles.

I personally want to see longer single player game modes they seem to get shorter and shorter, gameplay should come first, too good an engine great graphics but then less space on disc for the actual game!!

Epic should release a console. They might think twice about what they are demanding then. Though personally I would like a really powerful console since money is no longer really an object for me in regards to video games but for the tens of millions of other still in school etc it would be grossly unfair.

I really don't want this to happen to be honest. Development costs just keep going up and up and up and more studios are being shut down for failing to recoup costs even when they're putting out critically acclaimed, mildly commercially successful games - the kind of things that would have kept them in business in previous generations.

Plus, I doubt Sony could afford it anymore. I reckon they're going to go back to the PS2 model of less-powerful but trying-to-secure-exclusives that gave them all their success, they can't afford another expensive juggernaut of a console. If they lose Epic again it'll be a shame, but no real loss since they've never really had much support from them anyway.

If Epic wants to put their money where their mouth is and help fund this monstrosity of a console that they have in mind (not to mention that 95% of games for it would barely push the hardware), then they can be my guest.

Until they have to deal with the reality of power vs cost, especially in such a volatile global economy that we're currently in, they can "actively lobby" all they want, because it's not going to change a thing.

And regarding the Wii U... would anyone really be disappointed if the majority of games for it looked "ONLY" as good as the latest current gen titles like Uncharted 3 or Battlefield 3?

Wrong. They convinced Microsoft to make the 360 more powerful. I belive with some Gears of War tech demo or something? In addition to the exclusive trilogy.

If Epic convinces Microsoft to make the 720 more powerful, so will Sony. I can guarantee you that both of these consoles will at least be able to run Unreal Engine 4.

It's already too late for Wii U. GPU/CPU was probably decided on a year ago.

Oh? Care to share your details on the Wii U's GPU and CPU?

You seem like someone in the know from this statement.

I agree, we would like to see better looking games but how much better? and at what cost?. I never pay moe than 300 dollars for a console, I rarely pay 60 dollars for a game, but I like to try new stuff not buy very similar FPS, highly linear Adventure games, or cloned action games and I think part of the risk taking companies are leaving the console market because is already too expensive to produce high graphic level games now, I don't want to see what could happen next gen if the machines are just too powerful.
