Forums - Sales - The King (PS2) shall remain on it's throne

Like I said in another thread today, PS2 will still be selling when it's successors successor launches. What do you think it's lifetime sales will be when it's all said and done?

Nintendo only has themselves to blame for having a successful follow up to the DS. Stupid fucks.

:)

OT: If you need to clarify who's the king, then he is not that mighty ;)

170 million perhaps

DS and PS2 both deserve their success. Outstanding systems.

Amazing, really. 18 Months ago we were saying it was a matter of when, not if. Now were saying no chance.

Nintendo cut the DS's life short with the release of the 3DS.   Granted DS had saturated the Japanese market but it was still the top selling system in the rest of the world.

It's a wonder they didn't release WiiU last year and launch 3DS this year.   Sales would have been much better all around for Nintendo and DS would have without doubt surpassed PS2.

At any rate, looks like PS2 will indeed get to keep it's crown.   That's okay, it was an awesome system, it deserves it.

Wasn't the PS2's life cut short when Sony released the PS3 6 years ago?

Not so much since the PS2 was outselling the PS3 as recently as 2009.

Well, at least it printed more money and sold better in Japan - which as we all know, is the market that matters!

I dunno, I think everywhere but America, Europe and Japan all East is very important to, it's an untapped market that the PS2 helped grow tremendously.

PosPlatformNorth AmericaEuropeJapanRest of WorldGlobal
1 PlayStation 2 (PS2) 53.65 53.28 23.18 23.57 153.68
2 Nintendo DS (DS) 55.15 51.23 33.01 12.43 151.82

The PSP is actually second place for the "Rest of World" category with 12.84 million, very impressive.

How long can Sony support the PS2 along with the Vita, PSP and PS3? Then add on all their failing departments and things start to get a little hectic over there I think.

Things could change, but that part shouldn't be a factor. Sony hasn't supported the PS2 in any meaningful sense for a while now and doesn't even bother with a PS2 version of MLB The Show anymore. The PS2 is coasting entirely on affordability and its awesome back catalog at this point.

I was actually kidding, because who controls japan, controls the world (or at least my world of games), that's why I think it's the most important! But don't really want to take any merit from the PS2, it's a true beast, and deserves the throne. PS2 was the iphone of videogames, and thats saying a lot!

I can't believe how strong the PS2s legs are. We don't even stock the thing in stores in this country anymore.
