Forums - Sony - Sony did not properly market Uncharted

What is your point of view

They could have marketed it much better 43 29.66%

They did a usual job, nothing spectacular 42 28.97%

It was fine 37 25.52%

They did more than enough 23 15.86%

Total:145

I'm learning not to get my hopes up anymore. But what I was trying to say in OP is that, after seeing the footage of the game, not a trailer, not screens, the actual first 10 minutes of the game, that made me want to buy it instantly.

Assuming Sony has a new strategy for pricepoint in the coming gen, something more akin to PS2, if they were able to show more people the quality of this game with kiosks in schools or movie theaters, something really underground, cheap but precise and accurate (targetting your market efficiently), I can see it do much better.

That's really the gist of the thread. You'll tell me "no dah!", but the point was that, for UC, my opinion was that the proof was in the pudding, and I didn't know.

@CGI. While GT is declining, UC is ramping up. That's a sign of diverging potential.

You're expecting too much from Uncharted. It just doesn't have the WW appeal of GT.

And it took forever to complete

@The proof is in the pudding, I got the same epiphany for Shadow of the Colossus. Go figure.

TC...

They spent 7.82 million dollars in the UK alone. They were also running ads on youtube nonstop, were running ads in America like crazy (They had a commercial during the freaking NFL kick off between the Packers and the Saints), marketed it like crazy in Japan (the got Harrison Ford to actually promote the damn thing), and they had a partnership with Subway to promote Uncharted 3. It wouldn't surprise me if their marketing campaign ran them around 20 to 25 million dollars. I'm sorry... but this isn't Halo (Halo 3 had a 100 million dollar marketing campaign... only it sold near 15 million copies, so they easily made that back), Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, or Mario. People will either buy a game or they won't... so when you reach a certain point, you just have to call it quits with the marketing.

They can't be stopped...

^I understand what you mean. But the question is not "How much did they spend"... the question was "How effective was it".

OP does not say "Sony didn't market UC enough", it says " Sony didn't properly market UC". And I was clear to point out that this came to me after watching the videos provided by andrespetmonkey.

It isn't that hard to understand but maybe I'm not being clear. The conversation can't progress unless the premise is understood, if you guys know what I mean.

After only a few minutes of watching it, I was ready to go pick up a 2nd hand PS3 and buy Uncharted (the first one) new, out of principle. Here is the thread:

Oh noes!!!

The fact is that Uncharted is the best selling seventh generation franchise on the PS3 whether or not the marketing was bad but the sales suggest it wasn't.

^I'm not saying it did bad, I'm saying it could've done better, much better (in a non-criticizing kind of way).

I enjoyed playing Uncharted 1 & 2 but have just not got around to picking up number 3 due to other games taking a priority but for me the game just doesn't have the mass market appeal of some of the brands that outsell it. The obvious comparison for me is Tomb Raider in the genre and I feel that had a lot better brand appeal to both male and female audiences where as Uncharted is targetting a specific demographic that just isn't as broad on the PS3 as it is on the 360 for example.

I'd say they got the marketing of Uncharted 2 and 3 spot on but cocked up the first games marketing which is why it was relatively poor sales at the start then great legs through word of mouth. I honestly don't think you could ask for that many more sales though from a new IP this generation and it's in a very strong position to kick start the PS4 off with a bang!

I don't think Uncharted has the potential to be much bigger than what it currently is.

All of this, of course, is just my opinion.

Skyrim 100%'d. Dark Souls 100%'d.
Dark Souls > Skyrim.
Halo 4 is the best damn FPS since Halo 3.
