Forums - Sony - Sony did not properly market Uncharted

What is your point of view

They could have marketed it much better 43 29.66%

They did a usual job, nothing spectacular 42 28.97%

It was fine 37 25.52%

They did more than enough 23 15.86%

Total:145

Sony actually did a very good job advertising Uncharted, especially 3. Here in London it was on the side of buses, there were billboards advertising it EVERYWHERE and the TV adverts were on so often they started irritating me.

What Sony need to advertise better is God of War, I don't know about the rest of the world but the advertisement here in London was abysmal for GOW3, I saw an advert on TV ONCE and not one billboard or side of the bus advertisement. It also released during a PS3 shortage and was hardly bundled at all worldwide unlike LBP/UC3/R:FOM/Motorstorm which all sold extra well due to mass bundling. I'm amazed that it has managed to sell about 4.5m in just 2 years and still on it's way to be the first in the genre to pass 5 million, if it had the support UC3 had it would've sold well over 6 million by now and could've had a small chance at reaching 7 million. Let's wait and see how well Sony advertise God of War: Ascension, it'll be a better effort than they did with GOW3 but not a scratch on Uncharted 3's very good marketing campaign, and I bet they're not going to bundle it again either like they didn't with GOW3... Sony Playstation is run by absolute morons, they'll never have another 7.5m+ franchise outside of GT because they make too many exclusives and don't bother advertise 95% of them well enough.

^Well you bring in two points: 1 is revolution, 2 is word of mouth (due to addictiveness and longevity).

I'll just say, because I know you don't like to argue, that I disagree with 1. I don't disagree with 2, but if the revolutionary side of it can get more exposure (per OP), I believe word of mouth will be increased not due to addictiveness like you're saying, but due to market impact.

If you don't want to chew the fat, you don't need to respond. (said in a friendly way)

Munkeh: Compare that to the other flagships: Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy.

On another note, 3.8m is big for a usual game, but not for a game like Uncharted with such potential for mainstream appeal, what's your view on that?

Why? The genre is not as popular as those, though the latter hasn't sold that well recently

Uncharted 2 is the 9th best selling PS3 game, only beaten by GT, CoD, FIFA, GTA and MGS (though it should pass the later soon), it is doing rather well!

^I'm not saying the contrary munkeh. I'm talking about potential. Granted, we all see if with different glasses and I can appreciate that.

I never said they would, I only proposed a way . But at least we agree that UC as a franchise could, and I believe it can sell even more. I really believe in the talent at that studio I am not kidding.

Uncharted 3 had the biggest marketing budget in the UK that Sony has ever spent on any single game....

Sony market the Playstation brand like crazy in Europe and this game too had a very high profile campaign.

truer words

UC3 ads were freaking horrid at youtube.

Yay!!!

Uncharted doesnt have the potential. God of War on the other hand, have much more potential to reach 8mil+

It's rated M though. Wouldn't a game rated teen like UC be a better fit for that kind of potential??
