As far as the RPG genre goes with video games, Dragon Quest was the first. It was made in Japan.
The closest thing that came to RPGs before that were adventure games and dungeon crawlers. Dragon Quest was inspired by these, but it was most certainly more than just a dungeon crawler or an adveture. It was the first game developed that implemented a true menu based RPG battle system, and the first game with any battle system which included integrated characters and an integrated storyline.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
| chocoloco said: @ Carl2291 Your statements about violence in Western games are hypocritical as even most Japanese games have some sort of violence and so do most of the Western games you said were great. Batman Arkham city, (the current game I am playing sticks out the most) along with Dragon Age. |
Arkham City doesn't really have that much violence (Im talking mass killing here), and the game is based around stealth gameplay. That's why I singled it out.
Dragon Age Origins has a lot of violence. I know this. But what it also has is gameplay not like anything else this generation. It's unique. It's great. It's done Baldur's Gate proud. It was aimed at a certain market and it sold accordingly. They tried to casualise DA2 in several ways and it failed. This is what I mean about Western development failing. It's not about pure quality of the experience anymore, it's about making more $$$ than you would if you stayed true to your fanbase.
As for being hypocritical, I don't think I was. I wasn't singling out "violence", so to say. I was singling out shooting and gore. Violence is there in 95% of all videogames be it from Mario to Manhunt. Japanese games for the most part don't really have shooty-gore in mind... Not unless they're targeting the Western market. I gave a list of the biggest typical Western games in my other post, Ill repost it here and then give you a list of the biggest typical Japanese games. To note, this is console games...
West - Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Gears of War, Uncharted, God of War, Halo, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, Battlefield, GTA, Red Dead, Fable, Fallout, BioShock, Left 4 Dead, Dragon Age, Rockband, LEGO, Batman, Need for Speed, Forza, Portal.
Japan - Pokemon, Mario, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Animal Crossing, Brain Training, Wii Fit, Gran Turismo, Smash Bros., Zelda, Tekken, Demon's/Dark Souls, Professor Layton.
I could expand both lists, but it shows you a perfect picture. There's so much more variety in the Japanese list...
Can you show me some evidence of Japanese game sales declining?

DRAGON QUEST WAS NOT THE FIRST RPG ANYTHING. Lets get that straight
Ultima, dunjonquest, and others came long long before...........

Poor baby, what are you upset the ps3 wasnt the most popular system like the ps1 was? Or are you more upset that the psp had an install base 30 million units more than the ps3 did. I am not sure..............The psp had lower dev costs, higher install base, higher profit margin, better everything than the ps3. So it was natural for development to thrive on it............ There is no "winning" and "losing", thats only opinion, it isnt fact. But sales prove japan worldwide had a very nice time this gen. Ask namco who has risen into a super power
How much do you know about gaming? Dark souls, is just like every other rpg from software ever did in past gens. Dragons dogma is a different riff on monster hunter. Nothing all that new or exciting
You want change and rise to the occasion? Valkyria, mario and luigi , disgaea, xenoblade, radiant historia, devil survivor, song summoner, blue dragon, zhp and so much more.................. notice how I brought up games from the ps3, wii, 360, ds, psp, ios.......its easy. The gen has been an embarrasment of riches.......
You should seriously be ashamed you say generalizing is bad, and thats what your post is. One hateful false generalization |
Wow i almost missed this quality post.
Afraid that you dont realise what a disclaimer is. I was generalising and to put it simple i said such generalisation is to be taken with a grain of salt. You must realise that its impossible to go and evaluate every single individual company, so yes generalising leads to unfair evaluations on some cases, but i didnt say "bad"in the sense you shouldnt do it at all, otherwise it would be impossible to talk about the topic.
Sorry for you, if you had even checked my profile you would realise i dont even have a PS3. Oops... I am guessing someone is bu**hurt but that is the reality. As a whole Japanese development this cycle has been really bad on home consoles. Theres no denying it. If that somehow makes you feel ashamed, or if you cant see where the inspiration for games like Dark Souls and Dragons Dogma is coming from... well, lets just say its better if the japanese developers know better. And seriously, monster hunter is fun for a portable game, but it doesnt even come close to western MMORPG's in quality. But that was the whole point, japan development hid in the PSP cause it had no other choice. It was the same as admiting they couldnt take on home consoles, wich was the case.
| selnor said: He's right. Japanese games this gen have been pretty damn average. Resi 5, lost planet, final fantasy, devil may cry to name a few games which are pretty damn poor. Where they should have been great. Fish is right. Oh and fez is awesome better than any Japanese game this gen. Sorry but Japanese devs need to wake up. |
According to user reviews on Metacritic, Fez is a very mediocre game. It looks like a retro Japanese game mixed with Echochrome. His inspiration was surely Japanese games. Btw, Valkyria Chronicles, MGS4, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are one of the best games Ive played this gen and they're Japanese.

Was I suppose to know you were generalizing to make a point?
Japanese dev on consoles has been less prominent simply due to popularity.......thats realy all it came down too...........With valkjyria, star ocean 4, and more on consoles I would never say it were bad............
Monster hunter is better than 99 percent of the generic western mmo garbage...............I would take phantasy star over wow any day of the week.
"japan development hid in the PSP cause it had no other choice. It was the same as admiting they couldnt take on home consoles, wich was the case."
Funny false generalization............Your right, japan had no choice with the ps3 not popular at all, and the psp mega popular, it was an easy choice to make. You saying they couldnt make it on consoles is just a fanboyish thing to say

First point i'll make is: the japanese refused to move over to the next-gen at the time it come out due to pure nationalism (refused to buy the 360 for the whole year it was out ahead of the PS3). It was a shot in the foot. Sorry if not everyone is that irrational about their purchases.
Without a home market, of course the portable market becomes popular, theres no other choice! With the delay, japan was just too late and couldnt adapt to the new consoles. This is what happened. The atempts at calling me fanboy of something im not sure of, i really cant make sense of.
But i have to bite "generic western MMO garbage"? I have no idea what you're talking about.
The grindfest garbage comes from Korea and Japan.
I dont think theres are even so many western MMO's to make an average out of. Lets see... D&DOnline, Age of conan, WoW, SWTOR, Guild Wars, RIFT and EVE? Mind you these are games with incredible content support, it certainly isnt PSO v2.0. I would like to know what is "generic" about it, assuming you meant generic as a bad thing.
After finishing the 1st chapter of Tales of Grace F I now realize that I'm completely done with the Jrpgs genre. At least Nintendo will never let me down with their Japanese games.
