Forums - General - As half of England enters drought status, are we entering a global water crisis?

You haven't heard? It's obviously almost the end of the world. These things start to happen when stuff like this is around. I wouldn't get your hopes up about it ever returning to the way it used to be...

Obviously this sort of thing happens... our world doesn't stay the same all the time like some of us would wish it to.

Canada has around 20% fresh water reserves of the world and 7% of that is renewable. Water shortage will be a huge factor is some of the fast growing nations. The demand for clean drinking water should be seriously looked into. People just need reason to fight. First oil and than maybe water. At least with water one can understand a bit more. Also i hate the stupid bottled water. Not completely on topic but here is some interesting facts for thy eyes.

I agree, it does seem like an issue, though the UK is not really the problem, I believe China are the ones who are going to struggle the most. The UK's problems can mostly be solved by replacing our aging piping, once again, the fact that we did everything first is coming back to haunt us, as the Victorians didn't really imagine the modern demands

Having said that stuff looks bad, to me the solution is simple for many places with a lot of sun, offshore solar desalination plants! Probably very expensive, but would provide a renawable source of water

I live in suisse. And we have much rain and much water.

Thank good i live near a sea so i dont have to be worry the next years.

But to quote my teacher several years ago. Future Wars will be because of water.

yes as example countries building dams cutting the water access for other countries will be a huge problem in the future. saw a report about china and india and the water from the himalaya. if china redirects the water india won't get the water from there anymore. same with pakistan and that will be a problem in many countires on this planet.

Just start drinking the ocean water.

That will basically just make you more thirsty unless you desalinate it, which consumes a lot of energy

Yet I live right in between 3 of the biggest fresh water lakes and we have drought status every summer with watering bans. Not that those are bad. I never saw the point of wasting water to water the lawn, then spend gas to mow it. Nice crispy yellow lawn is fine.

I'll raise you with some fun fact about lawn mowers

I live in the driest state on the driest inhabited continent. (South Australia.)
Drought is a natural process; every country has drought cycles.
Recently we exited a large and long drought cycle as the el nino cycle ended and the wetter La Nina started.
Our rain levels are highly dependent on these cycles, however when we get La Nina, other countries in the Pacific get El Nino and they enter droughts.

Some good practices though is, don't bother watering the lawn, it will die off during summer and become fully green during winter, go with plants in the garden which can survive long periods of droughts, fix your leaky taps.
Get water efficient showers, toilets and washing machines... Get large rain water tanks in every home that people can use for watering gardens, boiling the kettle, filling sinks and baths.
Not only does it help keep the water tables up, but you save money in the long run on your water bills.

Conversely, Governments should have backup plans when these natural occurrences happen, which will and do happen, we have desalination plants here, yes they use allot of energy, but it's a good insurance to have, because without water, people, crops, industry all will inevitably die/fail. - This is especially important when an area/country has had any kind of history of extreme droughts.

Its raining here in Hong Kong and pretty soon we'll enter the tsunami season, so water is not a problem. BTW how much is a bottled water selling there.

Thanks for the fun facts. Always appreciate some new insight. Yea lot of ways we live now is just not sustainable with the growing world population. From 1 billion in 1800 to 7 billion in 2012. The growth is unprecidented.
