Forums - Sales - Has the Wii become one of the biggest disappointments in gaming?

I guess with all this talk of failure because of game sales, wouldn't a greater measurement of failure be by the amount of studios that have closed down. The only studios that I can think of that failed and closed because of developing on the Wii: Hudson entertainment, Frozen North productions, and Rainbow Studios.

Studios that failed and closed because of developing on the HD consoles: Bizarre Studios, Factor 5, FASA Studio, Grin, Kaos Studios, Midway, MTV games, Pandemic Studios, Realtime Worlds, Team Bondi, Zipper Interactive.

Off the top of my head I can name 4 times the developers that had to shutdown because they failed on HD consoles. I think that goes to show where the real failure and disappointment is.

That's really not the best way to measure it as you could equally argue they failed because they released on the platforms with the most competition (and therefore platforms containing the best games in the respective genres).

I'm not saying that many of those failed studios wouldn't have been safer if they developed less-riskier Wii games, but that's only part of the story.

No not at all. Nintendo gave us great games, and, for some time now, they have moved on to their next gen consoles.

It's not worth your time Kowenicki, Roi believes the moon landing was staged, that Aliens landed at Roswell and that Barack Obama was not born on the US soil........

PS : Funny thing is those publishers that gave the Wii the most support are those that will end the gen in the worth shape ( THQ, Ubisoft)

I will give you 15 minutes to apologize.

As for your other comment, THQ wasn't a strong Wii supporter and their recent financial struggles are mostly to blame on the recent uDraw flop on the 360 and PS3. Ubisoft should hardly have anything to complain about after the sales of their Just Dance series. Just like THQ, they seem to be losing money on other systems. It's actually kinda shocking how a person like you who seems wellversed in reading financial statements can come to such a ridiculous conclusion.

They are the two third parties that had the highest percentage of their income from the Wii.

Wii share in Ubisoft results got as high as 38% this gen, Wii share in THQ results was as high as 35%. ( and I mean the share of overall sales, not just consoles).

How is that for financial facts ?

So what's your definition of strong supporter ? Because for those 2 developers Wii share was actually the highest of any platform...

And the Wii is the longest Nintendo has went without the release of a new console so why shouldn't they move on. I just realized my post are way off topic, so for the discussion at hand I would say the Wii is no where near a disappointment. I have enjoyed nearly all of its best games don't really feel like listing them but the genres Nintendo does best in I enjoyed.

Actually, seven years passed between the launch of the NES and the SNES and nearly ten years between the Gameboy and the Gameboy Color, the Wii still has a lot to catch up with there.

In fact; the Wii is following the SNES - N64 - Gamecube recipe, around six year cycles, there is nothing exceptional about the Wii's longevity, its actually rather poor compared to quite a few other consoles and Nintendo machines (for instance, it will hardly be manufactured for twenty years like the NES).

The Wii was never going to live forever, it was a sprinter and not a long distance runner.

As a LONG TIME GAMER, I can name you REAL disappointments, Panasonic 3DO, GameGear, N-Gage, event he beloved Dreamcast and Saturn might fall under that category but to call the console who led the generation in sales and brought us TRUE gaming masterpieces one of those in my opinion is just a pure act of fanboyism.
Whether your prejudices towards graphics and whatever else some of you allow to dictate you to play a game or not facts are that the Mario Galaxy Saga, Skyward sword, Mario Kart Wii, Monster Hunter Tri, XenoBlade Chronicles, Metroid Prime 3, Smash Bros Brawl, Little Kings story, Donkey Kong Country returns, Super Mario Brothers, Fire Emblem, Wario Ware and I am sure I am forgetting at least 10 more AAA + games, these are amazing games people, whether Nintendo or a third party published them or developed them should not matter.
On a closing note, I never will understand why some people are clearly out there trying to make fun of Nintendo and always putting it down, after all It's the only true "Video game company" out there, not major enterprises/corporations trying to find a new way for revenue, I dont know, I guess soon enough Apple, Samsung will make a console of their own and they'll have loyalists of their own, anyway, I can only tell you that the Wii is/was/ and will always be a succesful "Gaming" device I mean if it wasnt a success why did it's rivals tried to follow on it's footsteps ? (Kinect and Move)

The seven years between the NES and the SNES was only in Japan; in the rest of the world it was six years, just like Wii.

And the SNES - N64 - Gamecube was only a five year cycle between each, which actually puts the Wii second only to the NES (in one territory) as far as console longevity before a successor.

Launch is launch, why separate regions? When a console launches it launches, or does it only count when its out in the US?

I said nothing factually wrong.

NES (July 1983) -----> SNES (Nov 1990) = 7 1/2 years

SNES (Nov 1990) ------> N64 (July 1996) = 5 1/2 years

N64 (July 1996) -------> NGC (Nov 2001) = 5 1/2 years

NGC (Nov 2001) -------- > Wii (Nov 2006) = 5 years

Wii (Nov 2006) ---------> Wii U (Nov 2012 ???) = 6 years

I'd like you to support your original claim that implied that the Wii is to blame for THQ's and Ubisoft's problems. This post does nothing of that sort. Also, you are just posting revenue shares at their highest point in this generation which might just be one exceptional year. Where are the sources? Post them.

Sources are financial annual report for each company...

Part of Wii in Ubisoft total revenue :

2010-2011 : 38%

2009-2010 : 26%

2008-2009 : 18%

2007-2008 : 10%

2006-2007 : 14%

Don't have time to dig THQ now ( their report is a pain to process but on top of my head I remember Wii share was over 30% in 2008-2009 and 2010-2011).

I stand corrected as far as Nintendo goes (by a whooping six months...) but you do realize that there were other consoles before the NES? That went longer than six years before they were replaced? The industry did not start with the NES. Besides, you left out the DS - 3DS, which was 6 1/2 years and the Gameboy - Gameboy Color which was around 9 years (yes, they are handhelds, but did you see the OP specify home consoles? And they're still Nintendo, but you didn't even adress them).

Besides, considering that both the N64 and GC were soundly beaten and barely moved any units, is it really a great feat for a market leader to go six months or less longer without being replaced? I'm sorry, but I don't think it is. The Wii is still following a fairly typical Nintendo pattern, no error there, and it is also the first of the three current gen systems to be replaced, despite being the market leader.
