Forums - Microsoft - Xbox 720: Blu-ray inside, always-on netcon required

There's no way it has a dual-GPU with 7000 series. That would price it out of competition.

Sorry, but this surely not correct... tho most of the rest can easily be speculated based on what we know already and in fact its all in my comparison thread.

Depends on which 7000 series. The 1 GB HD7570 can be found for less than 100 € / a bit more than $ 100 today, in Xmas 2013 they will be well under 40 €/$.

OT: The two GPUs bit of the rumor intrigues me. "Xbox 720′s graphics units will be able to work independently, drawing separate items simultaneously". Do they mean that one will draw the scenario while the other draws the characters? Or 1 GPU used for the main character and the map and the other one for the many enemies that will fight us in the plethora of FPS' that will come?

And even though each one will have its own memory, they will need to acces the system RAM for things like larger textures. How will the system be able to manage that without "collapsing"?

Interesting rumors.

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Current gaming PC: R5-7600, 32GB RAM 6000MT/s (CL30) and a RX 9060XT 16GB

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

I doubt it'll require a constant connection, that would be foolish.

Not sure about the dual 7K series AMD Gpus, but this is not to say that the design would incorporate twin discrete Gpus or even twin Gpus since the report stated they don't run in the equivalent of Xfire configuration.

If true, I figure one will operate like an integrated Gpu for OS, background, and Kinect functions while the discrete Gpu will have all resources dedicated toward rendering in-game graphics.

Incorporating Kinect 2.0 into the platform seems like a no brainer, given the success of Kinect. It should be one of the major features that distinguishes the new Xbox from other platforms.

Mixed feelings about the "always on" requirement though. Granted, mine are always connected, but an offline mode like Steam's would not only be preferred, but probably be a better decision, even if games must be registered to individual XBL accounts.

Cost-wise, I have a hard time seeing MS charge over $400 for the whole package, even if they once again choose to hobble their new platform by making HDD optional. I suppose if their bean counters can find a way to source NAND chips cheaply enough to include 8-16GB of flash memory on every unit, it would allow for at least one or two games to be cached or installed at any given time without a bulk storage HDD.

Lot of speculation at this point, but I am liking the Kinect 2.0 integration and the new rumored GPU set up is a lot more comforting than the previous HD6670 reports.

I don't care how powerful it is, if it needs to be connected at all times i wont be buying it, same goes for the PS4 if it needs to be connected before you can play a game.
Still i can think of a few Sony fans that is shitting their pants thinking about the Nextbox having 2 GPU's and one of them being from the 7xxx range, but i wont name no names xD.

I know you're mentioning me since you have this obsession with me.(Which is kinda weird for a 29 year old male)
Anyway this rumor is obviously false. 2 GPUs that work indepently? And it even mentions that Kinect will be bundled in..so unless the console is going to cost $500-$600, I call bull.

I don't care whether 720 is more powerful than PS4 or the other way around. I just want next-gen consoles to be exponentially more powerful than current-gen.

Thats waiting 8 years. Impressive...but that'll mean they will launch at the same time as the PS4. MS...I hope you know what your doing.

In other news, next xbox has bluray....MS stole a PS3 exclusive :P

Nope. They copied Sony.
That's IF this rumor is true though. Which I don't think it is.

Probably already mentioned within the thread, but i remember reading the Kinect's capabilities were restricted due to relying solely on the 360 as its source of power. Would the two GPUs alleviate that issue?

Its biggest problem was the limited data transfer of USB 2.0. The resolution has been reduced, because USB 2.0 couldn't handle the true resolution in combination with the amount of data coming from the two remaining USB ports (in case they were in use).

Always on internet? No thanks. If this is the case, I'll only be getting Wii U and PS4 next gen. My broadband caps at 100 gigs a month, and until I get something better, always on internet or complete digital distribution isn't in the cards for me.

I'm the result of someone exclusively playing Final Fantasy XI from the PS2 release till 2010, and only stopping for small bouts of catch up.

3DS Friend Code: Tate - Uh.. stuff happened... I need to get a new 3DS

Switch FC: SW-3272-7705-6029

If you add me, please let me know so I can add you back. =D

FFXI Character: Formally Tatewaki of Cerberus, Now Arngrim Of Sylph.  Retired forever. ; ;

FFXIV Character: Tate Raken of Hyperion

All time favorite game: Chrono Trigger.

All time favorite Manga: One piece... Followed by Ranma 1/2.

having to be always connected to the internet is a bad idea, I have poor student friends that are flatting and can't afford the internet but have an xbox so for ppl like them they will never consider buying it.

Like what you said, it's based on principle. What if for whatever reason my net want down? or i moved house and had to wait for a new connection, i'd be left not being able to play the NextBox.

If you don't buy the NextBox, you will not be able to play the NextBoy either.

but if i BUY the nextbox, i already spend my money on it... make internet mandatory is pushing the limits... i can go as far as to be on-line to register the software to the machine... but to be always on-line is unnecessary...

Online all the time?  That seems truly doubtful.  In 2013 that would surely limit the device hugely in many countries?

Mind you MS did push the orignal Xbox with a heavy online element which surely limited it in the day so who knows?  Maybe they'll push 360 more in emerging territories at a lower price and concentrate the new Xbox on US, UK and Europe?  I'd add Japan of course but is seems somewhat spurilous to so so.

sorry for the off-topic... UK and Europe? were do you think UK is? UK is in europe and its not a different market... so no need to split them up!

I was more thinking mainland Europe vs UK and European Union vs UK.  In UK we never consider ourselves fully part of Europe!

Bad habit really but it is hugely common in UK to refer to Europe seperately.  Even in large global companies I will hear senior staff talk about having UK and European offices.

My point remains, if MS really went for always connected (which I'm seriously doubting) then unless global infrastructure changes a lot between now and late 2013 they will surely be in trouble in most non US / European countries.

[off topic]
seriously? i know you drive in the wrong side of the road and don't like the french, but disliking so strongly being a part of Europe is news to me!

Most people I know would consider it an insult to be called "European"
