Forums - General - Athens or Sparta?

Two states within the same culture and myths.

Two totaly different mindsets.

Where would you - based on what we know/think today - choose to be a citizen, if you had to choose between one of them? The period I'm thinking of is pre-Peloponesian War.

Elaborate!

You had to be a Spartan from birth, you couldnt choose to be an Atenian either, though you could be given the status as citizen - if I remeber correctly.

Athens. The city that pretty much established western civilization.

Probably Athens.

Side note: I thought 300 was a horrible movie.

Athens. It had the more modern government. But I think living in both was no fun. Technology makes live better most of the time, that's for sure. Anyways. Athens with a first attempt on democracy (for some people) is far better than the totalitarian system Sparta does stand for.

Athenian because i am Athenian by birth.

A hard bent, totalitarian monarchy vs the origin of western democracy, science and philosophy? Well, given how useless the average ‘free’ human of our modern society is, and the fact that the Spartans beat the shit out of the Athenians, I have to side with... The Romans.

As for where I’d live... Life in general was better in Athens (unless you’re a fan of the army). If I was King, I’d obviously go with Sparta, but otherwise I would probably prefer to hang out with the likes of Plato and Aristotle.
