Coming this fall in Japan:

Studio Ghibli has announced an animated series based on Swedish author Astrid Lindgren‘s Ronia the Robber’s Daughter, to have its Japanese debut this fall. The show will be directed by Goro Miyazaki, son of Hayao, and it’ll be a first television series for the studio and the director.

Hopefully it won't take too long until it becomes available over here.

We want to take our 4 year old to see The lego movie, first time in the cinema. It's been a while since we went too (Goldmember was the last we saw in the cinema) I'm kinda shocked at the prices nowadays. 2 adults plus 1 kid, $35 for 2D, $44 for 3D. And 2D is only available in the weekend at 1pm. I can buy the blu-ray at release twice for that. A little different from when I was in my twenties, 65 guilders ($29) for the Laserdisc or dvd, 7 guilders ($3.20) general admission.

I used to go twice a week when I lived in Amsterdam. Cheap tickets, plenty of state of the art cinemas in a concentrated area, always possible to find a movie at the right time.  Opposed to one sticky cinema in Brantford, my home theater has better quality than the state that theater was in in 2002. It's been rebuild in the mean time and gone all digital ofcourse. I'll miss the little cue mark.

I watched The Master today. Interesting movie, food for thought. It's also the latest, perhaps last, movie shot on 65mm. Some of the scenes are so clear it feels like you can walk right into them. 8/10 will watch again.

I also watched Raiders of the lost Ark on blu-ray. Looks great, completely different movie but still great at what it sets out to do. Only the stop motion and drawn in special effects at the end look very dated.

Anchorman was fun, sounds like a future rental.

The diamond edition of Jungle book was great, my 2 year old was laughing at Balu. It didn't keep his attention all the way though. Today they wanted to watch the movie with that truck. After a lot of searching it turned out they meant rocky and bullwinkle, moose and squirrel.

TNG had a fun episode last night, the crew de-evolving into various animal species. Great job from the make up department with a fun Aliens vibe when trying to take control of the ship again. It could have been a double episode. My 2 year old's favorite character is commander Riker, his trumpet playing had him giggling at the screen. TNG works wonders when he's having a bad night, calms him right down. Must be that soothing engine hum.

I watched Pacific rim tonight, it's on sale this week, $2 on psn for HD rental. I didn't expect much from it, didn't get much out of it either. It didn't help that all the action was concealed by darkness, rain and fast shaky camera action, which makes a very soft image after heavy compression. I watched it on my 92" screen and at times it was hard to see what was going on.

My internet also had some indigestion an hour and a half into the movie, intermittently dropping back to SD quality. Not a good experience having to rewind constantly until the connection clears. (I purchased it on ps4, which does not offer a pre-download option. I tried to switch and watch it on ps3 but it wouldn't let me without going through some de/activation process)

For the movie itself, the artwork carried the movie. Yet I kept watching the time an hour in, bored of all the macho ego bullshit and total disregard of physics. It made war of the worlds look good. 5/10
Might have been a 6 had I been able to rent the blu-ray and watch some of the behind the scenes footage and concept artwork.

I just bought How to train your dragon, should be fun.

I watched 5cm per second today. On you tube to satisfy my curiosity and not spend $80 on it. It's definitely not worth that much, but it was still entertaining for 3 short stories. 6/10

Ok I have seen how to train your dragon now. It looks like a prequel to Brave but better. The animation is pretty good, only the water stuck out a bit, looking too realistic to match the rest of the visuals. The story isn't very original but it's cute and well executed. Great movie 8/10.
It doesn't need a sequel, but oh well, cheaper to re-use assets and easier to get people go see a sequel.

I also watched Barbarella, 60's cult classic soft porn sci-fi comedy. Looks great on blu-ray, a bit heavy on the film grain yet detail is well preserved. Colors are great and the crazy set designs and special effects really shine, great musical score too. 7/10
