Forums - Nintendo - Comprehensive list of fake Super Mario games

With the exception of Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land (GB) I think the whole list contains what I consider the bad Mario games... there are a few more out there I consider bad, but maybe its really all about the mushrooms...

Also quite a trip Mario had in his first few iteration, no wonder he sees goombas and stuff when he only feeds on Magic Mushrooms and some strange flowers...

Also sorry guys, but Rol has a point, there is no 'Super' Mario in those games, just Mario...

You can get the super mushrooms in Super Mario 64 DS but the effects of it are more akin to the Mega Mushroom so does it still count or would that Mario be considered as Mega Mario?

Well, it's definitely not Super Mario, because that is a permanent effect that only ends when the player messes up.

Super Mario Strikers (although maybe it's only in the Wii sequel Mario Strikers Charged) also has a mushroom power-up that makes your character temporarily bigger, but as said above, that's not the same thing as Super Mario.

Without a mushroom for Mario to touch, how can you know that Mario or Luigi in Mario Bros wouldn't have become Super?

It was their training ground for the Mushroom Kingdom and is probably the reason why Peach hired them. That and the fact she gets two heroes instead of one.

Superman's powers don't work under a red sun but he is still Superman.

It's really irrelevant to the topic at hand. There's no "Super" in Mario Bros., so nobody would expect Super Mario to be in the game anyway. DanneSandin and I just got sidetracked a little bit, but this thread is still about fake Super Mario games.

I still think it's relevent as none of those games you listed are "fake" :P and in mario galaxy you can actually get a mushrom that makes you tougher in the sense that you can take more hits from enemies; which is exactly the same effect as in the "originals" - you can take more hits. So the question is whether or not the "Super" is about Marios height or his ability to take more beating from his foes...

Super Mario has more abilities than regular Mario. It's not just about taking more hits until you die. Super Mario can break blocks and since Super Mario World he can also break blocks from above (through a spin jump in SMW or a stomp in the NSMB games).

Which he does perfectly fine in Galaxy...

Which would mean that Mario is Super Mario right from the start in SMG; but Super Mario shrinks to regular Mario when getting hit by an enemy which doesn't happen in SMG; therefore Mario isn't Super Mario in SMG, but something else.

...and how do we call something that is meant to deceive us? A fake.

So it's the shrinkers that define a "true" Super Mario game?

Rol, when Luigi touches a mushroom does he become Super Luigi or a Super Mario?

Super Luigi.

Has it ever been confirmed that the Mario in 'Super Mario' refers to Mario Mario's first name and not the brothers' surname?

I don't know. How is this relevant anyway?

It gives Nintendo an out.

Super First Name could be games that don't follow the mushroom rule. 64, Sunshine etc.

Super Surname could be the games where the mushroom rule is obeyed.

I just want to check before I refund all my not REAL Mario games for false advertising.

Paper Mario for the N64 was going to be called Super Mario RPG 2 originally, making SMRPG for the SNES part of a series rather than a "Super Nintendo" title.

Also, how is Super Paper Mario an exception?

It surprised me when I first played SML2, that I didn't become 'little' Mario when my powered up Mario was hit. In a similar fashion, when I played my first 3D Mario, it was curious how Mario had health and it could be restored with coins (reminded me of Sonic).

You could say that 3D Mario's only feature Super Mario with scattered power up moments, for those games Super Mario just became normal Mario.

Once again, here is how Super Mario works.

So Super Mario is just Mario except in the 2d versions when he in fact can becom e Super MArio?
