Forums - Nintendo - Comprehensive list of fake Super Mario games

I was able to figure out exactly what Rol was saying in the OP from the get-go and was going to clarify for him until he clarified himself.

And, for what it's wort,h I'm willing to agree with this stance.

I really disagree with your disposition that 3D Super Mario games are not real Super Mario games.

While 2D are simply more fun due to the platforming purity, 3D games have an amazing feeling about them. Mario, unlike untold number of other 2D greats, was capable of coming to 3D with thunderous applause. SM64 and the Galaxy twins are simply fantastic games that really defined their presentations and gameplay styles.

Sunshine was just a bad concept and more of a adventure that platforming game IMO. So maybe it can remain on the fake list.

However, the other three had the Super Mario essence and quality.

This thread isn't about opinions, it's about cold hard facts.

Yuuup and those facts I completely ignored. After all I am also "Super".

There's a bunch of fake Super Mario games out there, so I thought I would list them all to make less knowledgeable gamers aware of them. This list doesn't include iPhone garbage which aren't official games in the first place; this is just about titles that were wrongly called Super Mario games by Nintendo. In chronological order:

  • Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land (GB)
  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
  • Super Mario 64 (N64)
  • Super Mario Sunshine (GC)
  • Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 (GBA)
  • Super Mario 64 DS (DS)
  • Super Mario Strikers (GC) - Note: The game was called Mario Smash Football in Europe, so Nintendo didn't mislead gamers on a global level.
  • Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
Definite excusable exception: Super Mario Kart (SNES). The "Super" prefix comes from the console it was developed for, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. This is confirmed by later iterations of the series that all dropped the prefix "Super".
Questionable exception: Super Mario RPG (SNES). I am leaning towards another case like Super Mario Kart. The "Super" probably refers to the SNES, but since there was never a sequel, it can't be said with absolute certainty.

You are wrong. They are all Super Mario games. As far as I understand your reasoning you consider a Mario game fake if; they are NOT in 2D - would I be correct then?

Well, the original 2D Mario games were called Super Mario Bros. - Bros being the key word here. You are too concerned with the prefix "Super" when you totally disregard the suffix "Brothers". I would call the 2D Marios for the (Super) Brothers-series, as it's the one thing that connects all the "true" Mario games, and not the word "Super" since the original SMB actually is a sequal to the game "Mario Bros". Thus, Mario Bros is the first true Mario game (Donkey Kong excluded since Mario is called Jumpman in that one), and in that game you find "Bros" and not "Super" - therefore a Super Mario game isn't fake unless it's got the word "Bros" in it.

One could argue that the word "Super" implies the use of power ups as well.

So, in other words: you're wrong.

Hope that was understandable...

Your initial assumption is wrong, this is what Super Mario is all about.

So the only recquirment is that Mario eats a mushrum to grow bigger? I would still argue that it's the suffix of "Brothers" that matters since it was Mario Bros. that introduced Mario and Luigi by their full names and most of their abilities to the world.

Now you are (too) drunk.

The suffix "Bros." doesn't mean much, because Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. have barely anything in common. Mario Bros. has no power-ups, no run button, no mid-air control. You cannot jump on enemies without dying (unless they have already been flipped over). There is no actual game world, it's just the same stage layout with variations over and over again. Saying that Mario Bros. introduced most of Mario and Luigi's abilities is factually wrong.

Hehe lulz ^^

I'd still say that "Brothers" are what sets the original 2D Marios (and the two new ones) apart from every other Super Mario game. Do you consider Super Mario Bros 2 a "true" Mario game?

SMB2 was an expansion pack.

Without a mushroom for Mario to touch, how can you know that Mario or Luigi in Mario Bros wouldn't have become Super?

It was their training ground for the Mushroom Kingdom and is probably the reason why Peach hired them. That and the fact she gets two heroes instead of one.

Superman's powers don't work under a red sun but he is still Superman.

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

You can get the super mushrooms in Super Mario 64 DS but the effects of it are more akin to the Mega Mushroom so does it still count or would that Mario be considered as Mega Mario?

How about Super Paper Mario?
