So the only recquirment is that Mario eats a mushrum to grow bigger? I would still argue that it's the suffix of "Brothers" that matters since it was Mario Bros. that introduced Mario and Luigi by their full names and most of their abilities to the world.

The suffix "Bros." doesn't mean much, because Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. have barely anything in common. Mario Bros. has no power-ups, no run button, no mid-air control. You cannot jump on enemies without dying (unless they have already been flipped over). There is no actual game world, it's just the same stage layout with variations over and over again. Saying that Mario Bros. introduced most of Mario and Luigi's abilities is factually wrong.

I'd still say that "Brothers" are what sets the original 2D Marios (and the two new ones) apart from every other Super Mario game. Do you consider Super Mario Bros 2 a "true" Mario game?
