The original Super Mario Bros was released in Japan first, wouldn't be better to check the original Japanese manual instead?

Read the linked post again and study the picture. This isn't rocket science.

So, a Super Mario game needs to have a mushroom that Mario can eat/take in order to get other abilities that he didn't have before, correct?
