You can get the super mushrooms in Super Mario 64 DS but the effects of it are more akin to the Mega Mushroom so does it still count or would that Mario be considered as Mega Mario?

Well, it's definitely not Super Mario, because that is a permanent effect that only ends when the player messes up.

Super Mario Strikers (although maybe it's only in the Wii sequel Mario Strikers Charged) also has a mushroom power-up that makes your character temporarily bigger, but as said above, that's not the same thing as Super Mario.

Pyro as Bill said:

Without a mushroom for Mario to touch, how can you know that Mario or Luigi in Mario Bros wouldn't have become Super?

It was their training ground for the Mushroom Kingdom and is probably the reason why Peach hired them. That and the fact she gets two heroes instead of one.

Superman's powers don't work under a red sun but he is still Superman.

It's really irrelevant to the topic at hand. There's no "Super" in Mario Bros., so nobody would expect Super Mario to be in the game anyway. DanneSandin and I just got sidetracked a little bit, but this thread is still about fake Super Mario games.

I still think it's relevent as none of those games you listed are "fake" :P and in mario galaxy you can actually get a mushrom that makes you tougher in the sense that you can take more hits from enemies; which is exactly the same effect as in the "originals" - you can take more hits. So the question is whether or not the "Super" is about Marios height or his ability to take more beating from his foes...

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
