Nintendo already has an achievement system called stars and coins. Collect enough of them in one of their games and you unlock hidden levels, items, etc..

This must be for the 3DS cause I know it's not on the Wii. Can you give me an example of how this system works, meaning, do you find a star or coin in the game or do you have to do something to earn the star and coin? Thanks!

NSMB Wii get coins and unlock levels. MK Wii get stars to unlock more classes, karts, characters, etc.. Basically, what they have been doing for awhile in most if not all their games.

Yeah but most ps360 games have both unlockable collection items on top of acheivements etc.

My point is who gives a shit about a trophy except some shallow person? I know they are addicting like crack but that is when you have to step back and realize you are addicted to shit. If anything I want the game to reward me with unlockables not unlock a stupid trophy for "accomplishing" something in the game. Sorry, I think they are pointless (I know they aren't to most but to me they are).
Let me just go on a rant here. You know what?? I believe Nintendo has already topped Microsoft and Sony with trophies / achievements.. You want to know why? Smash Bros trophies... Yes, these are actually 100 times better than a platinum, gold or whatever the fuck. You want to know why? Cause they actually provide a short history lesson about the character, game, etc for each trophy. That to me is way better and actually provides something you can learn. OMG!!! Learn video game history from an in-game video game trophy... NO FUCKIN WAY!!! Now you tell me what is better. Staring a stupid color or looking a detailed trophy with some information on it.

The thing is, other games still do both.
Like in god of war, for completing the challenge of the titans, you unlock the developers halls and a secret skin and also a trophy. It's an easy way to look at a friends profile and see whether he's completed something or not, the social aspects are pretty well defined.
Or like in hot shots golf, if I hit a hole in one, I might get a crown (depending on the level), and rank up to my character, and also a trophy.
I think that what your missing, or maybe it doesn't matter to you, is that even though Nintendo does well through unlockables, it's undeniable that acheivements/trophies bring a social component to the game. You could argue that Nintendo is already "good enough", but I mean, thousands upon thousands of trophy guides have been written, entire websites dedicated to the concept, forum-goers have become teams of contributors.
Furthermore, with the average 20 trophies per game, in a similar Nintendo game, exactly how many unlockables should there be? I mean, I would agree if there were actually 20 unlockables, but at the same time, where does the developer make the call of what to include immediately and what to make unlockable.
And trophies etc are also usually reserved for difficult challenges, they add a "hardcoating" to an otherwise difficult game, to press you into really making that game your bitch. In Super Smash, you get an unlockable for beating levels or completing the game with certain characters, or reaching a certain goal in a minigame, but what about getting 20 multiplayer wins in a row, or getting a "perfect" etc etc?
I dunno, that's my point of view on it, anyway
I mean, I don't NEED trophies in my nintendo games, but they are a nice little extra thing to do.
