Forums - General - What do foreigners think of the United States of America?

Fantastic and fascinating country that has given so much good and exciting stuff to the world. One of a kind on so many levels. I love America.

Depends on what part you come from. USA is huge.

I'm from england

But if you mean it as a whole, taking in every region, remember each region has its own steriotypes so I'm doing a full list.

Fat
Plastic surgery
Huge burgers
Racist
Think the world is america
Act over the top
Crazy religious
Segregated
Can't spell ;)
Drive on the wrong side of the road
They have serious issues with nudity at the beach

Talk like. Oh my god that's is so .....

A few more but that's the general gist of things. It doesn't mean its true but oh well

Dude, you totally forgot the most important one.

Take every successful British TV show and make a crappy remake of it.  Are you ready for Downton Abbey:The Palm Beach Chronicles?

Okay, my laptop refuses to let me quote. What I meant to say was......

You've hit the nail on the head there Plezbo, no American version of any British TV show has ever been any good however, I would definatley watch Downton Abbey: The Palm Beach Chronicles. Infact I would also get the limited edition collectors dvd boxset too.

I think that the American version of Whose Line is it Anyway? is quite good, actually.

I hate Americans. They are fat and stupid and dumb. Oh wait. Nevermind. That is just southeast Michigan.

You better stop dissing my region!

In this thread I've learned that Austria is an independent country and not just a shortened form of Australia.

I can't help it though! We should chill and play PS3 though.

I'm from PRChina.
I used to think America is ok. but since I finished my English courses, I don't like them anymore.
1st There are full of racists and right wing maniacs in America, (stormfront)
2nd I hate their anti China political propagandas.
3rd I don't like American cultures, and their complete lack of respect towards other cultures. Espeacially acient cultures like Chinese or Indian or Middle eastern.
4th I hate their attitudes towards their neighbours like Mexico and other parts of Latin America, what made them think so highly of themselves?
5th I hate what they did in Iraq and Afganistan.

I'm American (Born in Florida.) and I must tell you I agree with you on the China thing. It is ridiculous how people here think China is the same place it used to be. Hasn't China "evolved" a ton? I would actually much rather live there than here. You have nice, clean cities and an interesting culture and language. When I was younger I used to adore everything Chinese, I don't much anymore (due to me now adoring Japan and Korea xD ) but I still have high respect for China. I hope this gives you a little better view of how some people don't believe all the lies about China that the media tells here. =)

I have a lot of things to say about it (mostly negative stuff), but what annoys me the most is how they think that the entire American continent is theirs (and it's just one continent by all logical geographical definitions, the US, and to a lesser extent Canada, seperate the continent so that instead of making the sacrifice of saying "US and Canada" they can say North America, without realizing that Mexico is part of North America).
It's offensive and disrespectful to the other Americans to refer to the US as "America" and using the demonym "American" exclusively for them.

Edit: "Oh, and as a favor, let us know what country you're from." I was born in Brazil, went to live in Italy when I was 2, and I've been in Canada since 2010.

I personally disagree with this. The name of the country is the United States of America. The name of Canada is Canada. The name of Mexico is Mexico. Only one of these has America in it, and that is the US. Canadians, Mexicans, and Americans. It is not out of arrogance that we use the term American, but because the name of our country contains America. What would you recommend we use instead?
