Forums - General - What do foreigners think of the United States of America?

I'm from USA NYC, and sometimes I wish NYC can separate and be its own country.

Political extremism that creates mistrust and hate against political opponents, which makes it hard to get anything done

From the UK

Not a massive fan of stereotyping others in particular Americans due to the vast size of the country with a varying political landscape depending on where you go not to mention so many different sub cultures.

But since you've asked-

Superpower
Hollywood
Silverscreen
Corporations
Hi-tech defence industry
In-efficient cars
Crumbling infrastructure
Massive debt
You guys love being patronised (In the UK we hate it)
Evangelical Christians
Warmongers
No universal healthcare
Hip hop
Pop
Videogame wise FPS, TPS and RTS lovers
Bill of Rights/Constitution
Gun lovers
Home of the modern day conspiracy theories
Left wing looneys
Right wing nutters
Obese
Pornography
Hicks
Melting pot

+ loads of others but I'd be here forever tying up a list.

The USA probably contains the broadest spectrum of people in the world. It would be impossible to say what a typical American is like, people who live in New York are vastly different from people in Los Angeles. But as a country I suppose the USA comes across as the leader/bully/policeman of the world, whatever your perspective is.

I'm sorry for saying this as its a terrible generalisation and i realise that that isnt the case for all of the US citizens.

But, in general americans are very veeeery dumb and in many case hold to prejudice and preconceptions: notice how almost everyone on movies and TV series has to have blue eyes. Also, gullable and easy to fool to get their money because its such a large market. Also, mostly uncappable of making their own opinions and easily follow the one that yells the louder.
Cases like not knowing geography in the slightest on the most basic levels, insane christianic and satanic sects, common murders and sereal killers stories, etc. Theres more but you hear these kind of things pretty often. Americans dont enjoy a blessing status in the eyes of the europeans, who are more introspective and reflective.

I thought the majority of people there were very friendly and polite, I was in Washington D.C and Virginia for about a month.

A guy in a shop, very seriously, offered to sell me a Tommy gun for $1000 though when he saw me reading a gun magazine. I think I was 19 at the time, and he was walking around with his two daughters. Very surreal moment.

I've toured around Florida and I have to say I really ejoyed it. People were friendlier than I am used to from other countries. I loved New York when I visited a friend for a week but my favourite are has to be Virginia as a whole. My base location that I traveled frm was Washington DC. In short I love the place and the people.

I am a born South African but have been living in the UK, London for 14 years. In general I find it easy to accept other peoples values while retaining my own. Once you learn to truly do that you can go to any place and love it for what it is.

Afraid of nudity and swearwords on normal TV but on the same time they love to see how some random idiot(be it an US Soldier or not) is killing tons of people.

Its always hard to tell.
Every country is ruled by idiots with some weird imaginations.
I know a few people from the US that are really kind but what people do you always see in media,on the internet and anywhere else?
Drug addicted, duckface sluts, war hungry, the stereotypical XboxLive kid who is threatening to call Obama so he is sending a nuke to the country of the person he is fighting with and and....

We had an english teacher from the US for a short time and he told us how you US people see and how he's seen the world outside of the USA.
He had a complete false picture of our country(Austria) - The first time he came here he was afraid cause he is black and he thought everyone here is from the KKK and still a Nazi...Why did he think that?Cause of the stuff he did read and from some TV shows.
The people here were kind to him and now he lives here and can't imagine to live anymore in the USA cause we have it in his opinion so much better here and i think on the facts he told us this is true.
Our country supports much more the people - We have healthcare for such a long time...People get help if they're injured and all that stuff.
Cause we got the money - We dont invest billions in weapons.

Oh and of course - Metric system is standard in the whole world but only you need your special stuff.

The Welcome is probably the most unfreindly I have ever encountered (Talking arriving at an Airport) with paranoia on the tip of every gun.

And Guns? Whats that all about you have a police force now (Armed to the Teeth because everyone else is)

Cannot speak for Churches you must of inherited our need to build one on any spare patch of ground. In the olden days it was Protestant/Catholic Churches now its Mosks and new Age christianity (Normally in a pub they have taken over)

Friendly (except in the Airport, Go figure you would think you would try your best at the point of entry).

New tech mingled with Old. My best example would be the Heath Robinson approach to the Self service checkouts I have encountered. Seem to be cobbled together (Will not apply everywhere as per this example but that old mixed with new I think is pretty common).

Checks - Who still uses them?

Big cars... Oh wait they are small now... Hell I am confused.

Free medical care - I mentioned once I thought it was a good idea, lucky to get out alive nearly strung up by a dozen travelling salesmen.

Service - Nuff said.

Pharmacies - Do you really need that many?

4 way stop sign - Come on that was just invented by Insurance companies to get more claims

Traffic cops performing the job of a roundabout (Now thats how we help with the jobless totals).

In all honesty my experince is they are Helpful, Open and Friendly and that stereotype has been born out from Atlanta to New York. Of course having a foreign accent seems to help with any rudeness.
