Forums - Gaming - Nikkei Industry Rumor: "Devs canning Vita projects, moving to 3DS"

If there's any truth to this, we might not be able to see the switch from one platform to another and the subsequent migration of games for 'bout a year at least.

"A major game industry source" = Nintendo.

They scared!

Not the first thing that came to mind but it makes a lot of sense.

Some Nintendo employees stirring up some bad Vita rumors. It's possible...

As long as the graphical fidelity isn't too greatly affected then whatever.

Article mentions devs completely dropping Vita development.

It's a ridiculous rumor so I wouldn't let you scare you too much.

Everything will be okay after the Vita price cut. Just like the 3DS.

The price certainly needs rectifying, but the difference is that 3DS benefited wonderfully with two blockbusters that have already cracked a million units in all three major markets (2m+ soon) and moved a lot of systems, and it'll have a new 2D Mario within the next year, not to mention the eventual new Pokemon; two more games guaranteed to do the same.  And even if Vita does manage to get Monster Hunter 4, 3DS will have it first, along with a commanding lead.

Handhelds are a much tougher sell than consoles as far as people owning more than one.  Vita not only has the challenge of convincing people there're enough games worth buying it for, but also that it's worth buying over a 3DS.  Frankly, it's not looking good for the foreseeable future...

Call of Duty, Assassins Creed and Bioshock were confirmed for this year on the Playstation Blog. Those are some big names.

Honestly what's hurting the Vita so much is its price and the price of games, not to mention Sony's lack of good marketing (not sure what it's like in Japan though). Plus they said their target audience is 20+ year olds who play 8+ hours a week which is the worst target audience and mindset to have if they want the Vita to be very successful...

Game prices are the same as 3DS. Cheaper if you count digital versions..

Why does 3DS success mean the Vita will do the same?

Anyway they need to cut the price and lose more cash but they could just kill a few artists and raise their song prices and make some cash there instead

Problemas solved :D right?

Assassain's Creed, Saints Row, and Mega Man were confirmed for the 3DS. We saw how that turned out.

I wouldn't say that this is true (in regards to your last paragraph). Historically there hasn't been more than one handheld worth owning up until the time of DS vs PSP, and PSP had its own issues on the front of multi-handheld ownership (namely that you could get much the the PSP experience on the PS2/3)

Conceivably, there's nothing halting multiplatform ownership if we're in an environment where both platforms get compelling, unique experiences, as what occurs regularly in the console market.

Ideally this is a great scenario, however there's just as much of a chance of the PSP's problem that you mentioned happening this time around as well, particularly with the bigger names announced so far (Uncharted, COD, AC, etc).  Sure, they'll all be new entries in their respective franchises, but will they sell systems with the appeal of their console brethren?

Furthermore, many games announced so far for Vita aren't original entries, but ports.  While 3DS has its share of these as well, it also has the aforementioned system sellers with worldwide appeal (and MH4 for Japan), which the Vita has nary a one even announced so far.

Add to this the prevalence of mobile gaming which, like it or not, still vies for people's on-the-go play time, and Vita has an uphill battle ahead of it.

Bad rumor. Even though these developers would like the Vita to succeed first so their own games can succeed more easily, it is just too ridiculous for them to all drop support at once. Aren't they in a contract or something?

While a Bioshock may be enough to make me personally look twice, none of those titles have the worldwide appeal and selling power of a good Mario platformer, Mario Kart or Pokemon.  And while COD could possibly do it in the west, I'm not yet convinced that its phenomenal selling power will carry over to a handheld.  We'll see, though.
