Forums - Gaming - Nikkei Industry Rumor: "Devs canning Vita projects, moving to 3DS"

PSVita will go through the same cycle as the PS3, something is telling me that, the cycle where the PS2 was doing so well when the PS3 first came out.

Give it about 2 years at the max, it should be doing fine.

2 years? At the rate mobile gaming is going, if the PSV hasn't gained significant traction before 2 years I wouldn't be surprised if SCE either dropped or drastically scaled back their Playstation portable operations. There's a lot more competition in the mobile market unlike the console business.

"A major game industry source" = Nintendo.

They scared!

Not the first thing that came to mind but it makes a lot of sense.

Some Nintendo employees stirring up some bad Vita rumors. It's possible...

...

Really?

They said the same thing about 3DS - so I guess the developers that cancelled their 3DS projects to move to Vita are now moving back to 3DS?
There never was any developers moving, it's just developers trying to scare Sony

Probably so, but still it's no good for Sony. They are asking for a price cut which in all likelyhood Sony can't afford.

I'm not going to give this article any real consideration because there is no name behind the source, but you have to admit it would be hilarious if the tables were turned in the eighth generation and developers started 'flocking to' Nintendo and dropping support for the competition.

Not that I want anyone to lose support, but it would be sooo ironic XD

I'm sorry but that's just not a very well thought out statement coming from a writer.

I mean;

Firstly, the DS was way more popular than PSP and was submerged in support. "...if the tables were turned...". Oh come on.

Secondly, your statement "eighth generation" along with the context of that whole paragraph implies that this has something to do with home consoles - which it hasn't.

Thirdly, (and this is as much aimed for the article as anything else) there were TONS of games listed as in development for the Vita. I'm not sure fo the exact numbers, but perhaps even more than for the 3DS.

Fourthly, "...dropping support for the competition", (a subsidiary to point 2) are you talking about portable consoles!? Because if so you might as well put 'Sony' there instead of 'competition'. There is no other dedicated handheld device. If you were to argue: IPAD, then I would say well the dev support is increasing for iOs platforms.

So no, it wouldn't be "sooo ironic" if devs dump the PSVita completely and focus only on 3DS (taking the protagonist stance here for a moment). Who ever (EVER) stated that the PSVita would beat the 3DS in any way shape or form? Well, maybe a few fanboys on the internet, but these people you are basing your irony on are a smaller percentage than the percentage of people that believe the earth is 5000 years old.

It's really troubling that Sony didn't outright deny it completely but instead said it was exaggerated. If it was just a few like say 1 or 2 you can bet Sony would have said as much but instead they gave no numbers.

I really think that Sony has blundered big time with Vita and will be forced to cut its price less than a year after launch. If this is an example of what we can expect from Kazuo Hirai then I really pity Sony shareholders.

Seriously guys, I have the vita and I played the 3ds. The 80 dollar difference between the consoles is totally justifiable. The 3ds isnt even in the same league when comes to presentation at all.

I remember when this sort of thing was circulating after the Wii launch... devs cutting HD development, moving to Wii etc. Never really happened though - obviously this is different circumstances but these rumours can stem from anything.

There's no doubt that hardware sales have a strong impact on software release though, I'd question the logic in dropping support based off of 8 weeks of sales in just Japan though. Given the PSP's success there I think you can have some faith the Vita will rebound, and when you consider how long it took Sony to turn the PS3 around any knee-jerk reactions seem premature.

Not that worrying a rumour anyway as I think it's western development Sony need to drum up more support for, and they ain't gonna be worrying about Japan's sales. EA, Activision, THQ have the sort of properties that could be big assets to the Vita but thus far non of them seem overly keen to support the thing.

Well, 3DS (Nintendo overall...) did get Tekken, so I guess anything's possible.

You can't sell a console just on pure hardware, Sony should have predicted this scenario (unless they have and I'll have to eat my words).

I expect what's more likely is that many more games will be multiplat. It wouldn't take much effort this gen to make games work for one or the other - the only real hurdle is the different number of screens.
