Everything will be okay after the Vita price cut. Just like the 3DS.

The price certainly needs rectifying, but the difference is that 3DS benefited wonderfully with two blockbusters that have already cracked a million units in all three major markets (2m+ soon) and moved a lot of systems, and it'll have a new 2D Mario within the next year, not to mention the eventual new Pokemon; two more games guaranteed to do the same.  And even if Vita does manage to get Monster Hunter 4, 3DS will have it first, along with a commanding lead.

Handhelds are a much tougher sell than consoles as far as people owning more than one.  Vita not only has the challenge of convincing people there're enough games worth buying it for, but also that it's worth buying over a 3DS.  Frankly, it's not looking good for the foreseeable future...

I wouldn't say that this is true (in regards to your last paragraph). Historically there hasn't been more than one handheld worth owning up until the time of DS vs PSP, and PSP had its own issues on the front of multi-handheld ownership (namely that you could get much the the PSP experience on the PS2/3)

Conceivably, there's nothing halting multiplatform ownership if we're in an environment where both platforms get compelling, unique experiences, as what occurs regularly in the console market.

Ideally this is a great scenario, however there's just as much of a chance of the PSP's problem that you mentioned happening this time around as well, particularly with the bigger names announced so far (Uncharted, COD, AC, etc).  Sure, they'll all be new entries in their respective franchises, but will they sell systems with the appeal of their console brethren?

Furthermore, many games announced so far for Vita aren't original entries, but ports.  While 3DS has its share of these as well, it also has the aforementioned system sellers with worldwide appeal (and MH4 for Japan), which the Vita has nary a one even announced so far.

Add to this the prevalence of mobile gaming which, like it or not, still vies for people's on-the-go play time, and Vita has an uphill battle ahead of it.
