Forums - Sales - San Andreas Vs. SMB3 : fight!

I have several arguments in defense of GTA: SA:

First, it makes more sense to count multiple platforms for SA as all versions are direct ports, unlike SMB3 (obviously counting Mario All-Stars is ridiculous).

Second, you only counted PS2 and Xbox versions of SA, not PC (or the trilogy releases).

Third, and by far the most important: regardless of sales, GTA: SA claims the moral victory by being an infinitely superior game on every level. Hell, the frickin' mini-games in SA are more complex than Mario's 2D outings.

You had me with the first two, but then the last one just made me cringe.

Moral victory? There is a shred of morality when you are shooting cops and beating up hookers?

Just because SA had more "complexity" in the game, doesn't mean it is more outright fun than SMB3. Did SA really bring something new to the table that the other two already didn't?

You had more power-ups in SMB3, the graphics were vastly improved, there was more variety in the levels, you could set your own path when playing through the levels, there were more bosses aside from Bowser, and the game had some great cheats if you knew where to look.

I happen to dislike what they did with the series in San Andreas. Vice City was such a great game, San Andreas was such a let down. Super Mario Bros 3 is still a ton of fun. When San Andreas is 20 years old do you think people will still go back to play it? I seriously doubt it. 20 years from now people will still be playing SMB3 and loving every minute.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

But I guess since this is a sales site, that argument is not gonna hold a lot of water... and will likely get me a lot of abuse from pre-teens and Peter Pan-types.

I share your point of view, I just made the mistake to forget the PC port, but it is not listed on the million seller list, do you know the number?

For the ones who say I should add all versions of SMB3, this is supid, what I wanted to do is to compare the success of the 2 games, SMB3's version on VC and portable were released years after and are not viable for this comparaison.

So if we add the PC version I think chances are good the SA beats SMB3.

Anyway, if we compare the ratio of each game to compare the success of each, we have : SMB3 : 17.28/62=28% and SA (PS2) : 15.21/118=13%.

For GTA4 I don't think it will beat SA, my guess is about 6/7 million on  PS3 & 360 = 12/14 million.

What if we count every version of Tetris! The 360 has Two versions. My cell phone has a version. It's been on almost every console since the 80's! Or....we could just follow the friggin rules. Mario 3 for the win.

So shouldn't that mean only PS2 version is counted, since it was out for more than half a year before the xbox kicked in?

I'm not sure what difference time makes, when (for example) the VC game is exactly the same, and (for another example) smb3 on gba is pretty much the same game + voice acting

Not sure quite what the logic is in counting XB and PC versions of San Andreas and yet only the NES version of SMB3. The whole comparison is flawed.

The Xbox and PC versions are direct ports of the PS2. Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 should be counted in as well, but not the Super Mario All-Stars game since that is a compilation. If that is fair game, then so should be that box-set Rockstar released for the GTA games.

I definitely disagree with your counter arguments. You don't see my point. Anyway just for you to know I'm a fan of Mario not of GTA, so I'm impartial in my answer.
But I agree that comparing games on a multi format basis is very hard and tricky...
Anyway I stop watching this thread :closed:
