Forums - Gaming - One Month With the PlayStation Vita: What Went Wrong? - GameSpot

Wow....I always assumed it was customary for people to be hyping a product so close to its release, I can't believe the amount of hate the vita is getting and it's not out yet.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

I too skimmed it except for the UI bit, which I agree is really poor. The WP7 Metro theme would look amazing on Vita.

He complains about the Vita price and then compares it to $500-$1000 dollar phones.

To be fair, most people get phones with plans and usually that makes the phones priced at $50-200.

Sony really should have dropped all these multimedia bells and whistles.

It would avoid being labelled as "cellphone competition" and would have a lower entry price compared to the 3DS.

The result is the Vita being the jack of all trades....however pure handheld gamers find the 3DS cheaper and it currently has more killer app games, and in general, people are gonna stick with their Iphones and Androids.

Its really hard to justify a Vita buy if your not a forum dweller gamer enthusiast.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

They seem to be rather harsh. Oh dear...

You can't compare a game like Angry Birds to Uncharted. You just can't. It's a gaming device. It may be handheld, but you expect the games to be on-par with those on consoles. Hence £40 as opposed to £1, otherwise, you could say all games on all platforms should cost the same, regardless of quality, length or production values. And that isn't right.

However, I concede the UI is poor and the loading times are excessive. And the lack of any multitasking is off (I'm writing this on the 3DS whilst having Revelations on-hold).

I can only imagine more of this thing happening in the future.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

The UI is customizable, all the little nags in the UI can be easily corrected.
The proprietary cable complaint is ridiculous. I have yet to see a modern high end device that uses a non proprietary one.
The multitasking issues and to some extent the big load times can be a problem (smaller games have less load times, smarter games have less load time too).
The unlock issue kind of proves that he didn't really spend much time with the device at all. How difficult can it be to get used to the behavior. Not that difficult at all.

while i agree with the points built on common sense, i think it's more about getting attention than anything else. i mean, he cries a thousand words over that you have to enable USB charging in the menu. ... could have been enabled from start, but WTF?

Oh, and, Browsing+gaming on one device on Consoles was patented by some asshole as far as i know.

I'm a Foreigner, and as such, i am grateful for everyone pointing out any mistakes in my english posted above - only this way i'll be able to improve. thank you!

Nothing but hate articles months before even the Japanese release. Sadly it's all opinionated so it can't be considered defamatory.

With a plan that REQUIRES $30 a month be spent on 3g for 2 years, which is $720.  This is fine for most people, because they want the 3g anyways, but for those of us who don't particularly feel like purchasing 3g, the phone winds up being perhaps a $100 initial investment with $720 spent on 3g you didn't particularly want costing you $820.  Or you could purchase the phone without a contract for about $600.  Regardless, not even close to the same price range as the Vita.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

Most high end devices this day and age use non propriatary cables, Apple is really the only big exception. Every modern smartphone, that isn't an iPhone, connects through micro USB and even the PS3 controllers connect through a mini USB cable. Using a propriatary format for something like that is a stupid decision, as it only increases clutter for the user. Now the user needs a cable for the Vita specifically aside from the cables that are already used.

The unlock issue may be something you can get used to, but his complaints are valid none the less, especially considering that getting a lockscreen up on screen is not something that should take a long time.

OT:

Sony have made a few blunders here, though their commitment to avoiding global standards is the only one that seems to really be painful. Everything else isn't something I can imagine getting worked up over, especially the browser issue. Just pause the game, pull out your phone and get cracking on it instead maybe?
