Just Add Water not interested in Wii U, says non-published Nintendo games don’t do well

January 31st, 2012

Developers and publishers have, for the most part, been positive when speaking about Wii U. But one studio that won’t be working on the console is Just Add Water.

Just Add Water is responsible for PSN’s Gravity Crash and the recently released Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD.

When CEO Stewart Gilray was asked about the console, he said that he’s “currently” not interested in working with Nintendo or on the Wii U itself. Gilray believes that only Nintendo-published games succeed on the company’s platforms, and Nintendo has a “crazy regard to IP and refuse to sign NDAs with indie-developer/publishers”.

“Well, we’ve already announced versions of Stranger and Munch for the Vita, but with regards to Nintendo, currently I’m not interested in working with them, or on their platform. Having developed a number of titles over the years for their various platforms, it’s become increasingly apparent that unless you are published by Nintendo you don’t tend to do very well.

“They also have this crazy regard to IP and refuse to sign NDAs with indie-developer/publishers, leaving us small guys open to having our ideas stolen with no recourse. We have already looked at doing some stuff on iOS and all I can say is watch this space.”

Someone still believe that 3rd parties don't do well on Nintendo platform. LOL.

Except you know, apart from a select few IPs and the usual casual oriented titles, third parties usually don't sell all that well in comparison to Nintendo published titles.

This also has nothing to do with a Wii U doom train though. Look at what Mario Kart 7 and 3D Land did for the 3DS. Judging from the title though you were just joking around.

''Someone still believe that 3rd parties don't do well on Nintendo platform. LOL.''

You telling me that in the recent history of Nintendo consoles the 3rd party multiplats HAVE NOT done worse on Nintendo consoles!?

Here's a segment from an old thread on this:

Well, the doom threads have officially led me to a state where I just want to laugh about it. In the Official "Nintendo is doomed.." thread, Galaki mentioned the notion of truth through repetition, indeed a scary concept. Thankfully Kenryoku_Maxis reminded us of the boy who cried wolf.

In proaction before this odd "Doomed" disease, I've decided to begin a treatment prescription thread. To start, here is a treament I suggest to begin with. Post your own treatment ideas. Try to be creative and funny as much as possible.

"Doomed" Treatment by padib:

1) Visit the following URL: Bi-Winning (or find the video at the bottom of this post).

2) Every time you see Charlie Sheen, or hear the name "Charlie Sheen" replace it by the Nintendo logo, or by the image of a Wii in your mind, or by the name "Nintendo".

3) Repeat step 2 at least 50 times.

If you've done this properly, you should be cured. If not, look at the other prescriptions below.

lol, good times :)

Rather than compare third party published games on Nintendo platforms to Nintendo published counterparts on the same platform, why don't they compare games with a similar level of IP and a similar quality level on other platforms?

The fact that Nintendo was the only company producing high quality games in well know franchises for the Wii and DS is the reason why their games sold so much better.

Not entirely sure why we're listening to a developer that has mostly only ever worked on Sony platforms but there you go...

Nintendo should not release big games at launch, so third parties has a chance to do some good sales. Right?

Yeah. Nintendo shouldn't release any 1st party games, because otherwise 3rd party games won't sell. Or, they should make them sub-par on purpose to let the weaker 3rd parties have a chance. Like when you play board games with a newbie. ;) It'll boost their confidence. :D

And Xbox if I'm not mistaken

No Xbox listed in their portfolio.

Release Date Titles Genre Platform(s)
2009 Gravity Crash Multidirectional shooter Playstation 3, Playstation Portable
2011 Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD First-person/Third-person action-adventure Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita
2012 Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee HD Platform Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita
2012 Oddworld: Abe HD Side-Scrolling, Platform Windows, PlayStation 3, TBA
TBA Oddworld: Hand of Odd Real-time strategy, Online TBA (possible release on Tablet computers)

They really don't strike me as a multiplatform developer in the classic sense (i.e. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo or any combination of them).
