How much motion controls does the Wii U have? Will I be able to play Zelda HD without motion controls? If that's true I must get a Wii U.

The Wii U will be fully backwards compatible with Wii motion controllers, such as the Wii motion controller and the Wii motion plus, the Wii fit and the Wii fit plus.

As for Zelda, you're out of luck. Aonuma and Miyamoto have already said they are sticking with motion controls for that series. Then again, they are working on new Zelda concepts on the 3DS which might interest you, and some may even possibly emerge on the Wii U. They just won't be the next big installment of Zelda you're alluding to. Sorry bud.

Having said that, there is still a possibility Nintendo changes their minds by then and offers  two modes of control, as the Zelda HD tech demo showed it being played on the Wii U controller, it's possible traditional controls will be supported. Keep your fingers crossed I guess.

Oh pants. So basically if you are to play the next Zelda on the Wii U you also have to buy the Wii motion plus if you didn't own a Wii?
Isnt that a bit awkward of Nintendo to force people to buy old peripherals like that?

It's not a Nintendo decision, don't see it as a company policy. It's an Aonuma (dev team) decision. The team that's in charge of the mainline Zelda, they mostly made that decision. It has nothing to do with Iwata or Nintendo's policies, it's a SW design decision by the Zelda team.

And again, it will likely change to support the "deeper and wider" direction the company as a whole is driving into this gen. Hope, and maybe even expect the trad controls to be supported by the Zelda team, as a company directive. Sounds good?

Sounds very good. So there is hope.

Yup ;)

One of the things that may have attracted 3rd party development for the Wii,would have been the fact that it wasnt a HD system therefore cheaper to develop games for.Especially for the smaller dev studios that have very small budgets and a lot less financial clout than the big guns.Maybe Mr Iwata is trying not to put off smaller developers who may not want to develop for WiiU by thinking that all games MUST be HD and will have astronomical dev costs.I think Nintendo is hoping to get everybody on board for this one, the big and the small devs

Well.

Iwata basically said not EVERY game they make has to have sky-high production values, as is becoming more and more the norm these days when looking at development for the HD twins.

“Looking at the software for home console systems, there are certainly the software titles for which very rich graphics must be reproduced on HD displays and which demand a large number of developers to spend a very long time to develop."

>> TRANSLATION: Games with stunning graphics require development teams of several hundreds of people, development times of several years,  and development budgets of several tens of millions of dollars.

“It is one of the truths that a certain number of such software titles must be prepared, or the consumers will not be satisfied. But we do not think that any and all the software must be created in that fashion."

>> TRANSLATION: Yes, we will make these games, because we know the hardcore gamers want them. But we don't think all games require monstrous recources; we will also make games with smaller budgets and teams.

Basically this.

Iwata makes the mistake of equating "glorious, full-blown HD" graphics to photorealism.

It's not really a mistake since that's how some of the hardcore market thinks.

Just because some people like photorealism doesn't make teigaga's point any less correct.  titles like 3D mario could be really lush and beautiful in "full blown" HD without going anywhere close to photorealism.  Just look at the ps3 releases of ratchet and clank as an example ... beautiful.

at OP - lulz at the thread title.  that's a great "hits" title.  xD

They'll all be HD, where does Iwata say the opposite? We've answered this many times in this thread...

HONEST QUESTION: What the hell is wrong with you people, don't you read? The text is verbatim in OP!

I guess the thread title is misleading after all.

3D Mario is one of Nintendo's big franchises and in the article Iwata clearly stated that their big franchises will benefit from lots of power.

My post to teigaga didn't say anything about people who like photo-realism. It referred to the people who think anything colorful and not photorealistic has sucky graphics.

Man the wiiU has some serious potential for HD Nintendo awesomeness, I want the goods.

Iwata is right, for exemple with the casual gamers theres no need to make a full hd gaming with photo realistic visuals and effects, do you think that wii sports could be so well acepted by casuals if they it has photo realistic graphics?, no, take Sports Champion from sony as an example, if they do another casual game like wiisports they just put it in full hd and put some extra textures and its ready for casuals, because what sells more to casuals is the casual stuff. if you "see" what i mean.

If you factor in teams currently working on phones & tablets, indie-teams on the PC, DS and 3DS , and Wii the vast majority of developers would go bankrupt trying to push the HD consoles currently, On top of that, a large portion (potentially the majority) of development teams on the HD consoles are currently losing money and will not survive if they see development costs increase from where they currently are. While these teams will probably use the additional processing power to eliminate polygonalization artifacts, texture pixelation and to render at 1080p@60fps wit 16xAA and 16xAF I really don't expect them to increase detail to a level much beyond what they currently are.

I think Nintendo's expectations are in line with mine, and what they're saying is they are not going to block games from being released for the Wii U based on whether they have "advanced" graphics

Photorealistic? No
HD? Yes

Don't be tossers Nintendo, Zelda at 720p or 1080p native, or gtfo.
