Forums - Nintendo - Not all Wii U games need to be in glorious, full-blown HD - Iwata

"However, he thinks there are several franchises that will benefit from Wii U’s HD capabilities, like Zelda. "

On the contrary, Zelda could hugely benefit by scaling down costs with a 2D installment. Would easily sell 5m and be more profitable than an HD 5-year-development time game selling 10m.

The thing is they shouldn't be taking 5 years to make a Zelda Game like they have lately.

I doubt Nintendo would release anything like that yet.

Well.

Iwata basically said not EVERY game they make has to have sky-high production values, as is becoming more and more the norm these days when looking at development for the HD twins.

“Looking at the software for home console systems, there are certainly the software titles for which very rich graphics must be reproduced on HD displays and which demand a large number of developers to spend a very long time to develop."

>> TRANSLATION: Games with stunning graphics require development teams of several hundreds of people, development times of several years,  and development budgets of several tens of millions of dollars.

“It is one of the truths that a certain number of such software titles must be prepared, or the consumers will not be satisfied. But we do not think that any and all the software must be created in that fashion."

>> TRANSLATION: Yes, we will make these games, because we know the hardcore gamers want them. But we don't think all games require monstrous recources; we will also make games with smaller budgets and teams.

“It is not necessary for us to deploy a huge number of people in order to develop such games,” he continued, stating that, more than ever, Nintendo is bringing in third parties when it does need to develop more graphically complex titles.

So basically Nintendo intends to keep developing cheap casual games, maximize profitability, cash millions, never innovate, and let 3rd parties take all the risks on the core gamers' market. Wait! Isn't that exactly what they're doing on Wii and 3DS? How courageous...

No, they just don't throw their money away. As they said, for the games that need high fidelity graphics, they are ready to  dish out the dough in house.

Iwata (from another piece):

"Take The Legend of Zelda franchise, for example, the fans must be looking for the graphic representations that they do not see as cheap at all when the title is released for the Wii U. When it is necessary, we do not hesitate to role out our resources."

Nothing as crazy as that. But words can be powerful things!

True... true.
