So the CEO of PlayStation France wants to mimic SEGA's decision to artificially cut the Saturn's lifespan short preventing a return to profitability in order to beat the competition to the market? Does Sony have a single competent executive?

You do realize that stores stopped selling the Saturn and its games months before Sega pulled the plug on it, right?

Sega made a lot of mistakes with the Genesis at the end of its life and with the Saturn, but Sega really didn't kill off the Saturn early; the Saturn died on its own as it lost all support from third party publishers and retailers.

Well, I'm not an expert here so maybe I'm wrong, but isn't it the case that Sega of Japan killed the Saturn in Japan in an effort to pave the way for the Dreamcast there?  And that alienated some Japanese companies?

But yeah, in any case this can hardly be considered a parallel situation.

You are correct. The Saturn was very strong second place in Japan, it was first place for sometime initially. Sega pulled the plug on the platform early because Sega of America and Sega Europe completely botched their handling of the platform. The only reason the N64 finished second in the Japan was because Sega killed the Saturn far too early.

Well, they'll be under WAY more pressure than anyone else once they have to release a new console. And currently Microsoft is under the least amount of pressure.

Damn these Sony spokesmen...

Sony's going to have an insanely rough time if they're going to want to push out PS4 anytime soon. I mean, the PS3's profitable now right? Would be better to take advantage of that, it seems to have some nice momentum going. They're nowhere near to recovering the humongous losses they made before.

It makes a lot of sense. Sony have never released a console first, and releasing first is no guarantee of huge sales (after all the Wii which released last has done best sales wise this this gen) and I think they will be comfortable with releasing the next console in their own time without rushing it.

But didnt the PS1 and PS2 get released first? Also you have to remember, spending the most $$$$ to have the most powerful system doesnt warrant automatic sales even if the system may be better than its competitors.

Sega systems were released before the ps1 and ps2 as others have already mentioned.

I agree with you about the powerful system not necessarily leading to great sales - after all the ps2 wasnt the most powerful console of its gen. When I was talking about the features and how sony would back them, I wasnt talking about power (which sony have already stated that they wont be going as cuttingedge as the ps3 was) but the other potential features such as cloud gaming, cross platform play, move integration into the hardware and the total package.

The 720 and the ps4 will launch in 2013. With 720 dev kits being handed out in march, a late 2013 launch is the most resonable estimate with sony following suit.

The thing people don't seem to get is that Sony has never released a system more than 1 year after their competition because, if the market embraces your competition, the features you add don't matter ...

While it is not easy to track, a large portion of console sales happen because of word of mouth and first hand experience with a system at family/friends houses. With each month that passes the likelihood of Nintendo/Microsoft having a game (like Rockband, Wii Sports or Modern Warfare) that drives sales for the next generation of systems increases, which will take away sales from both the PS3 and prevent sales from happening for the PS4.

It will release by the end of 2013, no matter what they say. It's the obvious thing to do.

Delaying it even further would be like delaying a pit stop in F1. Overdo your stint, even if it looks like you're still in a reasonable shape, and you eat dust in the end.

Sony under "a lot less preassure" to announce new hardware...

...because they have enough preassure trying to sell Vita.

This. And I think your comparison will hold true if they fail to launch in time, and delay.
