Forums - Sony - Sony Under “A Lot Less Pressure” To Announce New Hardware, Says CEO

Sony should make a massive event sometime in February or March of 2013 to announce/unveil the PS4. Of course leave enough secret for another massive event at next years E3, with a launch in October or November in 2013.

It makes a lot of sense. Sony have never released a console first, and releasing first is no guarantee of huge sales (after all the Wii which released last has done best sales wise this this gen) and I think they will be comfortable with releasing the next console in their own time without rushing it.

But didnt the PS1 and PS2 get released first? Also you have to remember, spending the most $$$$ to have the most powerful system doesnt warrant automatic sales even if the system may be better than its competitors.

Dreamcast was released before the ps2, as for the ps1... I dont remember.  And Im too lazy too look it up.

I think they need a new console, as Nintendo and Microsoft, so I don't believe them.

I would tend to agree they are likely under less pressure then Nintendo. Also with Vita bleeding money launching another device this year would be suicide. I still suspect the next Xbox could come this fall though I think economic conditions are making it less likely. Strategically challenging Nintendo would be the best idea however with the current economic crisis launching a new platform will be difficult.

Though the question begging to be asked will the economic conditions improve? According to Canada's Government America is done, they will never recover to where they were ten years ago. If that is the case I wonder if launching now might be in everyones best interests.

Who says economic conditions will improve? Japan isn't doing so hot either its getting harder and harder for Japanese companies to turn a profit. So I think the economy needs to be considered very carefully in any future hardware release by Sony.

I agree with you on that. Many 1st world countries wont be back to how they were a few years ago, speculation will continue pushing their economies to cut on public investing, creation of jobs and public helps in general. China, India, Brazil and many other emerging countries are growing really fast and there are a lot of opportunities to go there and make profits. Gaming companies, like all other companies in general, should focus on creating new markets and thus securing their profits and future success.

Nintendo's case in Korea is a very interesting topic and they should use it with other countries to replicate the success.

Sega rushed the launch of the Saturn to beat the PS1 to market. It failed miserably outside of Japan and the Dreamcast launched before the PS2.

For those who don't seem to understand why Sony would be under pressure ...

Investors and third party publishers are (probably) not confident that the PS3 will continue selling well after the next generation of hardware is released; and third party publishers also (probably) want Sony to release a new system that is (roughly) in line with the Wii U and "XBox 720" to ensure that they can release their games across all platforms, and don't believe that Sony would be successful releasing a system two years into a new generatio

/thread

In addition to what HappySqurriel said, both MS and Nintendo are in a stronger position now than when the 360 and Wii launched. On the other end of the spectrum Sony is not. Wii was expected to bomb horribly and the 360 was expected to be a distant second place. After giving up most of it's consumer base by being slow to market with the PS3, I can't see Sony allowing both Nintendo and MS a significant head start. Given the currency exchange rate situation between the dollar and the yen, MS is a bigger threat than ever.

This is why my sig will be confirmed by E3 2012 regardless of what anyone from MSony has stated so far.

I hope you restrict yourself to a single bragging thread, if you indeed get it right.

Lol what ?

They said they are taking minimal loses on every Vita sold. Add memory cards to that and they are likely profitable on each unit.

Can't agree. MS is in a great position in US/UK and a few other territories with a strong chance of using Live to carry over their install base to their next console. Launching a lot behind the next MS console would most likely simply 'Gift' those regions to MS and see Sony's marketshare shrink.

They can launch behind the next MS console I think, but not by much - say 3 to 4 months max I'd say.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

@Zlejedi I wasn't refering to the loss on hardware sales. It costs money to launch hardware Sony is selling so few units that they are most definitely bleeding money. I can't quickly see how much Sony has spent on the ad campaign or their distribution network or over all R&D.

A price cut will likely occur if the console has similar success to Japan meaning it could hit Sony with even larger financial problems then Nintendo had with 3DS.

If a console sells as bad as Vita is their is no way it isn't bleeding money.
