 How does this make sense? If your console is doing well and starting momentum then why in the world would you want to announce a new one? That'll just take away the PS3's momentum!

For those who don't seem to understand why Sony would be under pressure ...

Investors and third party publishers are (probably) not confident that the PS3 will continue selling well after the next generation of hardware is released; and third party publishers also (probably) want Sony to release a new system that is (roughly) in line with the Wii U and "XBox 720" to ensure that they can release their games across all platforms, and don't believe that Sony would be successful releasing a system two years into a new generation.

That's true. PS3 sales are still very strong so no need for a PS4 just yet.

You think Microsoft is releasing Xbox 720 any time soon?

They have even less pressure than Sony to announce new hardware.

I expect PS4 and Xbox 720 to be at most, 1 year apart.

Do I think Microsoft is releasing the XBox 720 soon? Yes ...

While I think that they may choose to announce it at an event other than E3, Microsoft will be releasing their next system in 2013. At this point in time I wouldn't bet on any particular rumour being true, but the massive spike in the number of rumours about Microsoft's next system that are coming from better sources makes me more and more confident that an announcement is coming relatively soon.

It makes a lot of sense. Sony have never released a console first, and releasing first is no guarantee of huge sales (after all the Wii which released last has done best sales wise this this gen) and I think they will be comfortable with releasing the next console in their own time without rushing it. I assume, as with the PSV, that they will back the features the PS4 will have against the competition and we wont see a release before 2014. This will also give them time to focus more on the PSV thru its launch time and a couple of years beyond.
