Forums - Sony - Sony Under “A Lot Less Pressure” To Announce New Hardware, Says CEO

The Silent Chief

As we enter the sixth year of the PlayStation 3′s life cycle ( in Japan and North American territories ) numerous rumors from different sources claim that Sony’s next video game hardware should be on track for a 2013 debut. Meanwhile head honchos at Sony have denied on several occasions that its next home console will be announced anytime soon.

During a recent interview with Le Point newly appointed CEO of PlayStation France,Philippe Cardon, addressed the growing PS4 speculation as well. According to Cardon 2011 was a “very good year” for the PS3 despite several disasters ( natural and technical ) beyond the company’s control. In France the PS3 was the best selling console of 2011, edging out the Nintendo Wii.

With the PS3′s momentum still growing around the world Cardon believes that Sony is under a “lot less pressure” to reveal a new console. Unlike the Nintendo Wii, whose sales have been on the decline.

Regarding the PS4 rumors Cardon closed the interview by stating that Sony will probably be the last to announce something. This statement contradicts claims made by analysts who believe the PS4 will be available before Microsoft’s next console.

Really? I'd have thought that's the last thing investors would want ...

I call BS on this. Sony is launching Vita this year worldwide. While the PS3 has plenty of momentum going for it right now.

They won't be talking about a new console in 2012. PS3 is too strong, PSP is still very strong in Japan and Vita is launching in NA and EU. PS2 will be officially discontinued this year however, as they fill those lines for other hardware.

This is expected, Nintendo announced the successor to the Wii now Sony will be behind if they don't launch a new console within a year after the WiiU, same goes for Microsoft.

I would tend to agree they are likely under less pressure then Nintendo. Also with Vita bleeding money launching another device this year would be suicide. I still suspect the next Xbox could come this fall though I think economic conditions are making it less likely. Strategically challenging Nintendo would be the best idea however with the current economic crisis launching a new platform will be difficult.

Though the question begging to be asked will the economic conditions improve? According to Canada's Government America is done, they will never recover to where they were ten years ago. If that is the case I wonder if launching now might be in everyones best interests.

Who says economic conditions will improve? Japan isn't doing so hot either its getting harder and harder for Japanese companies to turn a profit. So I think the economy needs to be considered very carefully in any future hardware release by Sony.

Hmm, they don't actually pose any pressure though, just a nuisence

Lag-induced double-quote. My apologies, netbook is a little slow at times.

Sounds right, and good idea for Sony. If Nintendo is left alone too long and they play hard, they could capture next gen all to themselves. Just my opinion please don't bite.
