I wouldn't expect it to do well in Europe if I was you.

Maybe, but if we look at PSP and PS3 sales France's share of total European sales is 1/6th.

Nah only Germany's PC market is a lot bigger than France's.
If France gets 40k Germany "should" get 30k, Italy and Spain 20-25k, UK also more like 80k.

250k doesn't sound that far off.

Probably the decision comes from the retailers. Usually Sony push strongly to sell huge quantities of hardware and software to increase the short term result, but due to the fact the quantities sold in Japan are not so brilliant they cannot promise to the main customers big volumes as they do usually.

Since the original shipment was at 80K for France, your scheme might look more like:

Germany gets 60K, Italy/Spain 40-50K, UK gets 160K. Then add the reduced 40K for france.

340-360K. Originally it would've been maybe 380-400K.

Japan's original shipment was 400K for the wifi model I think, 700K for both models. So why would sony ship so much less for Europe than for Japan? Would the holiday season explain it?

Edit: Read my first question to be "Ship less for Europe than Japan, in proportion to population and general sales market ration Europe vs Japan".

I was just proportionally speaking what other countries "SHOULD" get when France only has 40k.

I really wonder how Sony is able to know how well the device will sell before even the marketing starts. If anything the reason for this could the horrible exchange rate between yen and western currencies. They are taking too big losses per unit so they undership.... In Japan Vita probably makes profit but with these horrible dollar and euro exchange rates they probably make pretty big loss per unit in the west. During last E3 when they announced Vita Euro was something like 110 yens...Now it's under 100...
