It is hard to tell... Financially? Nope... Gaming experience? Yes! Sony give us so many exclusive HD games. but if we comparing with PS1 and PS2, PS3 just failed to dominated this gen.

Just in terms of sales, yes. It did remarkably well for being $600 and releasing a year after its main rival.

But for Sony, no, it was a failure. It bled money the first few years, and they lost massive market share.

That brings up the question: What kind of sales were Sony expecting?

I'm thinking they knew they were in trouble when they saw what Microsoft had compared to what they were doing.

Market share from last generation around 75%.
Market share this generation between 27% to 30%.
Huge fall in total market share from last generation to this generation.
Loss of third party exclusives. The rise and rise of its competitors Nintendo and Microsoft.

PS2 sold over 130 million+ and PS3 will be lucky to reach 100 million ltd sales. Nintendo and Microsoft have been a lot more competitive with Sony this generation than last generation.

Billions invested in Blu-Ray and development of the PS3s Cell and PSN. Hopefully the PS4 does not cost that much for the consumer and Sony sticks with Blu-Ray technology. Unless an affordable upgrade to Blu-Ray is available. Digital sales of games, music and movies are on the rise and eliminates storage and distribution costs.

PS3 has been a lot less successful than the last two generations, market leaders PS and PS2.

-For 1st party exclusives: Yes,it have more and better exclusives than psx,ps2.
-For 3rd party games: No,many became multi platform instead of sony exclusives like ps2 era.
-For finance: No,it made sony lose billions.

It's a success if U look at it as a stand alone console, it's almost 61M, It has a big library, sold Million of software world wide, so it's a success, but it doesn't build on the success PS1, & PS2 made, simply cos Sony decided to do a console that is with different standards to it's generation. I see that for the first time in V.Games history all 3 home consoles & 2 hand-held are success. Market expands and it will continue to do so, Next gen console will all succeed if the 3 giants play it right.

It's selling okay, but the brand lost massive momentum with the consumers. I fear it'll never recover and just keep falling. Xbox is younger and should still be strong years from now. But in time, even Nintendo and Mario will come to pass too.

But hey, do not listen to cheap forum philosophy. Go play MW3 and be happy.

The PS3 is like a guy who pissed away his inheritance, threw away amazing 6 figure jobs where he didn't have to do jack all day but is a success because he banged a lot of hot chicks.

I get the job part but how does the "hot chick" part equate?

The games.

Because the PS3 had a lot of hot chicks, everything else doesn't matter in the eyes of teenagers and young men, because that's the only measurement of relevance for them. What they don't see is that without money it will become increasingly harder for this Sony guy to get hot chicks. This kind of lifestyle isn't sustainable, but the PS3 is considered successful regardless.

I stole it from Rololtrolol.

Tease.

for gamers yes
for Sony no

Yeah this.
They can't do that for the future generations or they'll be out of gaming.

Well, they went from awful sales at the beginning of this generation to a bit less than I'm sure that they expected kind of sales now. Do you guys think that's a success?
