Fourth Generation

When Nintendo last had incredible third party support, felt sorry for the Sega Genesis, but of course it was going to die since 90% of all the exclusives (third party) were on the SNES.

It is also the generation that spawned alot of new game series:

-Yoshi's Island
-Star Fox
-F-Zero
-Chrono series
-Tales Series
-Star Ocean

And made alot of other series revolutionized (Street Fighter, Final Fight, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, etc).

Runner up to the generations imo would be the 6th generation: PS2 is absolutely the best system of that generation and the only system that can be compared to the great SNES of the 4th gen.

Not true, Megadrive had a ton of exclusives.

What worthwhile third party developed game is there for the Genesis?

Not to be disrespectful but I can not understand how a person with a computer and Internet connection can ask questions like this in 2012. I'd have to recommend:

Alien Soldier
Arrow Flash
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Chakan: The Forever Man
Contra: Hard Corps
Crusader of Centy
Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf
Disney's Aladdin
Dynamite Headdy
Earthworm Jim
Earthworm Jim 2
Elemental Master
Fire Shark
Gaiares
Gauntlet IV
General Chaos
Gunstar Heroes
Herzog Zwei
The Immortal
Jungle Strike
LandStalker
Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar
The Lion King
M.U.S.H.A.
Mega Turrican
Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat II
Panorama Cotton
Pulseman
Ranger X
Road Rash II
RoboCop Versus The Terminator
Rocket Knight Adventures
Sagaia
Skitchin'
Sparkster
Splatterhouse 3
Star Control
StarFlight
Strider
Thunder Force III
Truxton
Twinkle Tale
Warsong
Wiz 'n' Liz: The Frantic Wabbit Wescue

A couple of these might be second party but otherwise these titles are third party, the vast majority either exclusive or simply best on the Genesis. I hope you enjoy these games as much as I do.

Despite this gen being cinematic and dumbed down I think it's still the best.

Oblivion, Dark Souls, Red Dead, Enemy Territory Quake Wars, Mount & Blade, Dragone Age, Battelfield, Fallout, Bioshock, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Dark Messiah of M&M, Sassin's Creed and many more.

''Edit: Any suggestions for RPGs? I loved the Shining Force series and I wasnt a big fan of the Phantasy Star Series.''

The Genesis didn't have many JRPGs to be honest. That being said Crusader of Centy, Warsong and Master of Monsters are pretty good. Also, if you include the SEGA CD then the Lunar games are great. Finally, did you play Phantasy Star IV? I found it to be much better than II and III.

Edit: Shadowrun, how do I keep forgetting Shadowrun? Additionally, I hear good things about Dragon Slayer.

The sixth gen, definitely.

It had some of the best JRPGs out there with Persona 3 and 4.
Definitely some of the best action RPGs with both Kingdom Hearts game.
The prime of the sandbox games with GTA.
Possibly the most moving gaming experiences we will ever have with ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.
Modern motion controlls, way before they become popular.

Then just a list of really solid games. It's a lot like the current generation, just that it's not as sucky.

Home consoles: the 5th generation, because the PS1 is my favorite console of all time.

Portables: The Nintendo DS (my favorite handheld of all time) and the PSP is very good too.

The 90s

Tough call. I consider the SNES-N64 a sort of golden era. In the end I voted for the N64 era. The first analog sticks showed up. Super Mario 64 and Zelda OoT showed everyone how to do a 3D game right. GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Smash Bros, and Diddy Kong racing were all fantastic multiplayer games.

This generation is no slouch either.

Switch Code: SW-7377-9189-3397 -- Nintendo Network ID: theRepublic -- Steam ID: theRepublic

Now Playing
Switch - Super Mario Maker 2 (2019)
3DS - Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Trilogy) (2005/2014)
Mobile - Yugioh Duel Links (2017)
Mobile - Super Mario Run (2017)
PC - Borderlands 2 (2012)
PC - Deep Rock Galactic (2020)

Sega's first party offerings ALONE made the Sega Megadrive/Genesis a more than worthy purchase............

But when you throw in excellent 3rd party support and superior versions of the likes of Mortal Kombat, then it was an essential purchase.

Yes, and those saying that the SNES destroyed the Megadrive? no way man. (the sales gap wasn't that big at all)

I was blissfully happy with both my Sega Megadrive and Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Lastly........... nice to see the 4th gen kicking ass and taking names in the poll, it more than deserves it.

You really want me to make a list?

Thunder Force 2-4

MUSHA

Castle Of Illusion

World of Illusion

Aladdin

Street Fighter II

Castlevania The New Generation

Gunstar Heroes

Contra Hard Corps

Mortal Kombat 1-3

TMNT Hyperstone Heist

Vectorman 1-2(Traveler's Tales were third party, I think)

Strider

Rocket Knight Adventures

Dynamite Headdy

Jurassic Park Rampage Edition

Mutant League Hockey

Sega had better third party support for sports games, not gonna name them all.

Ghouls and Ghosts

Red Zone

You know, I haven't even looked at a list of Megadrive games, I'm just brainstorming, i'm sure there are more but I think I made my point.

I LOVE ICELAND!

5th gen. PC gaming was awesome at that time, the consoles were seeing some of the greatest classics coming out and using what was at the time pretty revolutionary tech, and handhelds got Pokemon which was a total game changer.

You do not have the right to never be offended.
