4th.
A bunch of great platformers, Japan dominance, A Link to the Past, and of course, the best thing was the endless selection of amazing RPGs.
Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, Earthbound, Final Fantasy VI are pretty much my favorite games ever.

Easily the 5th gen! Between the N64 & PS1, nothing has topped that (yet). The PS3 is quickly gaining ground for me, however!

I geuss tothe SEGA SATURN did not exit and did not have tons of awesome Japan Games >_>

lol, im sorry to say, but.. there is a reason people dont remember the sega saturn

Total Championships: Nintendo - 4, Sony - 2, Atari - 1, Microsoft - 0, Sega - 0

I say a mix between 4th and 5th generation.

I can't decide between awesomeness of SNES, Gameboy and Sega Mega Drive and the magnificence of PSone, N64 and Gameboy Color.

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

The 16-bit generation was a golden era of gaming. Sega and Nintendo each owned about half the market. The direct competition benefited gamers like no other generation.

When Sony entered the market for a three way split things changed. We lost Sega right when the Dreamcast set things right. Then Microsoft entered for another three way split and the fanboy wars really got out of hand. It used to be you either had a Sega or Nintendo console and you'd play what you didn't have at a friends house and have fun regardless of who made the game. Now the fanboy wars have ruined gaming culture to the point that some people won't even consider the other side and are incapable of enjoying a game exclusive to a rival company.

Yeah, the 16-bit bit generation was a better simpler time. The games have aged remarkably well too.

The best improvement in visuals and gameplay I've seen. Sony and Microsoft really took a big jump from there previous previous consoles and changed the whole gaming world with online gameplay and amazing visuals

Fourth Generation

When Nintendo last had incredible third party support, felt sorry for the Sega Genesis, but of course it was going to die since 90% of all the exclusives (third party) were on the SNES.

It is also the generation that spawned alot of new game series:

-Yoshi's Island
-Star Fox
-F-Zero
-Chrono series
-Tales Series
-Star Ocean

And made alot of other series revolutionized (Street Fighter, Final Fight, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, etc).

Runner up to the generations imo would be the 6th generation: PS2 is absolutely the best system of that generation and the only system that can be compared to the great SNES of the 4th gen.

Not true, Megadrive had a ton of exclusives.

What worthwhile third party developed game is there for the Genesis?

You really want me to make a list?

Thunder Force 2-4

MUSHA

Castle Of Illusion

World of Illusion

Aladdin

Street Fighter II

Castlevania The New Generation

Gunstar Heroes

Contra Hard Corps

Mortal Kombat 1-3

TMNT Hyperstone Heist

Vectorman 1-2(Traveler's Tales were third party, I think)

Strider

Rocket Knight Adventures

Dynamite Headdy

Jurassic Park Rampage Edition

Mutant League Hockey

Sega had better third party support for sports games, not gonna name them all.

Ghouls and Ghosts

Red Zone

You know, I haven't even looked at a list of Megadrive games, I'm just brainstorming, i'm sure there are more but I think I made my point.

Ghouls and Ghosts and Aladdin, I played the SNES versions.

Same with the SF2.

But I'll check some of the games you mentioned. Any RPGs on the SGEN that you know of ;o?

The Megadrive Aladdin game is different from the SNES one.

As for RPG's, that was one of its weaker genres. Megadrive had some western RPG's like Dungeons and Dragons, Shadowrun or Landstalker, most of which are probably pretty outdated. As for japanese ones, Sega themselves made the Phantasy Star games, of which II was ground breaking for its time (1989) but hasn't aged well, III is bad, and IV is awesome. Shining Force 1 and 2 are great tactical RPG games. Shining in the Darkness is good. Super Hydilide looks really outdated but might be worth checking out.

Lunar I and II are, aside from phantasy stars the best competitors the Final Fantasy games of the SNES, but they were released on the Mega CD, and are super rare, so you'll only be able to play them through emulation (unless you are super rich and have the patience to track them down). If you do want to play them, I recommend using the Kega Fusion emulator, it's the best one I've used, and it does 32X games and Mega CD games as well as regular Megadrive games.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Gonna say 4th gen because that's what i grew up with (SNES all the way!). I actually still have my SNES, i dont think id ever sell it :D Otherwise definitely 7th gen best new IP's coming out of Sony.

It was cheaper too, since all you had to have was two consoles with exclusives in between, now its between 3 consoles AND the 2 portables ;x.

That's a very good point. Maybe fans of Sega and Nintendo didn't hate eachother becuase if they saved their pennies they didn't have to choose just one. Now fanboys don't just prefer one console over another, they actualy wish harm on the other consoles and hope they fail.

Its a shame though, having 3 consoles offers competition for third parties AND especially first parties, imo, this generation offered some of the best 1st party titles in a long time.

Not sure why anyone would want to hate a system to the point of wanting it to die :(. Guess those old 1990s-early 2000s feuds were too much xD).

I think the problem is that too many people today don't just buy a product and treat it like a product. They identify with companies as if they are part of some exclusive club just because they bought their stuff.

The things I like are part of who I am, but I am not a part of those things. The mistake people are making today is thinking that what they buy makes them who they are.

Here's a very interesting clip from a documentary. It's about crazy Apple fans, but it applies to all rabid fanboys who have lost touch with reality and can no longer empathize with regular human beings.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewJ6Wzmr_V0

What he's talking about applies to everyone who has ever looked down on someone based on choosing to buy a rival product to that which they identify with.
